
Rough surf keeps swimmers on land in Lavallette
Rough waves left over from Hurricane Erin kept swimmers our of the water in Lavallette on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025.
Earlier delays had cleared across much of the northbound Garden State Parkway as the worst of Sunday traffic was over.
One northbound slowdown remained between Exit 98 north to Exit 102; otherwise, travel times had improved across much of the highway.
Drivers on northbound lanes between Parkway Exit 63 leaving Long Beach Island to the Raritan Toll Plaza were averaging 59 minutes for the 63-mile journey.
In Toms River, westbound traffic leaving Seaside Heights on Route 37 remained heavy heading toward the Parkway.
Traffic remains slow in the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway as beachgoers head for home.
In Monmouth County, northbound traffic is heavy north of Exit 98 through Exit 102.
On Route 36, traffic remains slow heading west toward the Parkway through Atlantic Highlands, Port Monmouth and Keansburg. Route 36 is also heavy through Long Branch and Eatontown.
In Long Branch, traffic remains thick around Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park.
In Ocean County, traffic slowdowns are reported on the northbound Parkway lanes near Routes 37 in Toms River and between Route 70 in Brick and Chambers Bridge Road.
From Parkway Exit 63 leaving Long Beach Island to the Raritan Toll Plaza, the travel time is 1 hour 10 minutes for the 63-mile trip.
Garden State Parkway officials said two different three-mile delays were slowing northbound traffic along the Jersey Shore.
Miles of delays were reported between Exit 77 in Berkeley and Lakehurst Road in Toms River. Drivers faced another three-mile in Brick between Exit 89A for Route 70 and Exit 90 for Chambers Bridge Road.
In Monmouth County, northbound Parkway drivers faced two miles stop-and-go traffic north of Exit 98.
Delays were also reported in both directions of Route 36 heading through Eatontown and into Long Branch.
Leaving Long Beach Island, major delays were happening on westbound Route 72. Drivers were making better time on East Bay Avenue.
Travel times between Parkway Exit 63 for Long Beach Island to the Raritan Toll Plaza was a sluggish 1 hour 28 minutes for the 63-mile trip.
Northbound traffic is slowing on the Garden State Parkway from Berkeley to Brick. Heavy stop-and-go traffic was reported in the Brick section of the highway’s northbound lanes between Route 70 and Chambers Bridge Road.
In southern Ocean County, westbound traffic leaving Long Beach Island was heavy on Route 72 and Eat Bay Avenue in Manahawkin heading toward the Parkway.
In Monmouth County, traffic was heavy in Long Branch around Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park.
In Lake Como, northbound traffic on Route 71 was slow approaching Belmar.
10 a.m. update
Beautiful weather led to a busy weekend at the Jersey Shore, yet the Garden State Parkway remained mostly clear at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24.
Traffic remained heavy near beaches, especially on Ocean Avenue in Long Branch and along both approaches of Route 36 toward Sandy Hook.
In southern Ocean County, traffic was building in both directions of Route 72 into Long Beach Island as day trippers headed east and weekenders started their drives home.
At 10 a.m., the northbound Garden State Parkway travel time between Long Beach Island’s Exit 63 and the Raritan Toll Plaza was 59 minutes for the 63-mile trip.
