My mother and stepfather have 45 pigs on 1.2 acres of land, these pigs only get fed Corn and dog food everyday for the past couple years (I've been living in and out of the property for 2 in a half years). The pigs also don't get much area to roam, they really don't have much of a dry area and when they do a lot of the pigs fight for it, one of the pens in the back has about 12 pigs in a 40×40 area.. they have a couple of house pigs too that have overgrown nails to the point that they can't walk far in the trailer and they have to put a bucket under the pig whenever the pew or poop, one of the pigs can't walk anymore due to an unknown reason.. She mother and I can't really say anything to them without them getting pissed off at me, what should I do? Just call animal control?
If I do that it's a Felony per animal because I live in Florida, any suggestions?

Also.. they don't really eat the pigs, maybe one or two get slaughtered a year.

This is animal abuse, you should report it, otherwise you are condoning animal abuse just because it’s family

  2. Martyinco

Wow, people are horrible, call animal control and or cops.

  3. SpurdoMonster

This is no condition to house pigs. You really need to report this.

  4. UtgaardLoki

If you can’t say anything (I assume you’ve tried before), call animal control.

    That’s horrific. *Really horrific*.

  5. Krenzigin

Spend the money get a vet to come see them. But before so you need a shelter. Dry land. Water source and better food. Or just have them put down. Prob to unhealthy for human consumption.

  6. CElia_472

Call the cops first. Anyone who sees this would be repulsed and required to contact the proper agencies.

    This is fucking cruel.

  7. bluecollarpaid

If you report it and your parents are elderly or what have you there might be some degree of understanding and leniency. If someone else calls in things will probably be much worse. No one is going to want them for consumption. No telling what they are carrying parasite wise. This is a sad and disgusting situation.

  8. Gemini_Honey

You can’t try to sell them or give them away, (craiglist/Facebook market etc.)? I’m sure someone will be willing to take them considering the situation and living conditions

  9. iamsplendid

That is fucking awful. If you’re worried about family, give them a heads up, but you have to call animal control. That is such a sad situation. Those poor pigs.

Well since you don’t want to get your family in trouble, and they are giving you a place to stay, and you want the pigs to have better living conditions, it looks like the solution is not easy, but it is simple: do it yourself.

With a few days work you can drastically improve the conditions on a 1.2 acre farm.

I’m sure the pigs and your family will appreciate it, you earn your place to stay, and no one goes to jail.

Now the overcrowding may be another issue, but maybe you can solve that too, and make everyone a little money while you’re at it.

Again, I know it’s not easy, but might be the best and most rewarding option if you are willing to get a little dirty.

  11. Own_Alarm_3935

I’d let them know that they (or you with their permission) need to start rehoming or culling the majority of them or you will be obligated to call animal control. This even borders on creating an unsafe environment for themselves. They should be concerned

  12. timberwolf0122

This isn’t going to feel good, but for the sake of the authorities you need to call animal control/ASPCA and have the authorizes intervene

  13. No_Question974

Didn’t pay attention to which one of my subreddits i was in.
Was waiting for the camera to pan down to a big pitbull laying in the mud with them

  14. Algarviano

that is animal cruelty and for humans that is a serious public health problem.

call any gov. agency responsabel for public health , can’t tell each one because i don’t know the country, but the police knows. call them.

P.S.:i know for experience thar family is always complicated, hope everything works out well for the pigs and everyone involved.

Ugh, that’s way too many pigs for such a small amount of land. And they aren’t even selling the pigs? This unfortunately sounds like there’s some mental illness going on. Getting angry with you for commenting sounds like reasoning with them or educating them isn’t an option. Anonymously reporting them will be a tough call to make, but I think you have to do it. The pigs are suffering. Maybe your parents think the pigs make them happy or whatever, but your parents are suffering too. It must cost a fortune to feed that many pigs with no purpose.

I wouldn’t necessarily assume they’d be charged with felonies. There are misdemeanor animal cruelty charges in Florida as well, intended for neglect and overcrowding. The felony level has to do with severe injury / death. It’s possible they may not be criminally charged at all. You aren’t sending them to the gulag. You’re sending them and the pigs help in the only way that’s available to you. Good luck.

Make a new pen and move them into it. Looks like this pen is made with pallets and hog panel. A new pen of the same design should be easy to make and inexpensive. If you can mount dirt up on the center, that would be helpful too.

  17. Plenty-Giraffe6022

You know what you need to do.

  18. NobleOneRed

Maybe without saying anything, sell a few here and there. Would they really even notice?

Or take it upon yourself to extend their loving area. 1.2 acres isn’t that small. I feel like my chickens in my city duplex have more room than those pigs

  19. AnyEast-5505

Don’t let these people make you feel like y’all are doing anything wrong… typically you can house 20-60 hogs on 2 acres of land . As long as they are fed and watered with clean water? Have the proper wormers given to them? 45 hogs is about all I’d do on that amount of land.. plus.. pigs (hogs) thrive in wet areas and actually have to have that wetness and mud bc ummmm🤔 duh…. Pigs can’t sweat!!! These people that are screaming animal abuse know nothing about raising a hog outside of the little tiny minis that are sold as pets🙄 (which to me is abuse bc pigs don’t live like that on nature) … these pigs in this video are bred for eating… plain and simple… you raise them, breed them, eat them (on a homestead) or sell them if you are a hog farmer…

  20. Trunip-up-loud77

Make an anonymous tip to animal control or bi-law.

  21. ergonomic_logic

I thought there was a flood and this was images of the devastation left behind it didn’t occur to me for a moment people are keeping animals in these conditions.

  22. ComplaintNo6835

Look, if these were my neighbors I’d report them in a heartbeat. If they were my parents I’d express my disgust and walk away. Ratting your folks out and getting them charged with 40 felonies is insane. If you do it then don’t expect to have a relationship with your family going forward.

  23. Asleep_Onion

I just don’t understand why they have so many pigs, if they’re not using them for anything. If they slaughter 2 a year, why would they need more than about 4 pigs? That yard looks absolutely disgusting, and it has to be costing them a fortune to feed them, so I don’t understand the point. If they just want to have them as pets, again it seems like 4 would be plenty.

Not to be rude, but they clearly have a mental disorder. Like whatever it is that hoarders have. That’s basically what they’re doing, they’re living like disgusting hoarders except instead of piles of old newspapers, they hoard miserable sick pigs. They need an intervention of some sort.

  24. nancypo1

OMG report that and they will get those poor animals out of there right away that is absolute filth

  25. nancypo1

And those animals are probably already very sick or will die if you don’t do it right away

  26. troublebruther

I’ve got a solution. Get some fencing and build some new pens. Take fill dirt and make mounds where they can stay out of the mud.
I read that you are unemployed. But I bet you can find some side work to get the fencing or trade work for fencing supplies.
Other than that, from your replies you seem to not be able to do anything about it.

  27. 404-skill_not_found

You really need advice that we can’t help much with. Failing to handle this well will have unimaginable and unintended impacts far beyond what anyone has offered. What you can use is someone they really respect to help get your concerns through to them.

  28. NewRedditorHere

You let those animals bask in their miserable existence. Or you report your parents.

  29. RedditUserNameHere02

Open up the gates and let them go

  30. Just butcher them and eat. Also you can feed the rest with internals and leftovers

  31. Colonel_Pusstache

Just drop the address or I’m sure someone could find it out from the information you gave and call animal control for the pigs. Then you won’t have to do anything but might go to jail.

  32. Anthemusa831

This should have NDFW warning on it considering the content or extreme animal abuse.

Maybe scrolling for an average person this is whatever but for an audience educated on husbandry, this video with your account of the conditions throughout the comments it’s pretty horrific.

Describing watching a “house pig” struggling to drink water because it can’t walk due to neglect is extreme.

With all due respect and admiration for your efforts at doing something… I think you are not quite removed enough from the situation to really understand/see the cruelty on display here.

  33. Babrahamlincoln3859

Sell them. This is a terrible way to keep pigs.

  34. unicorntearsffff

Post online and give them away. Most older people just want stuff to own and never take care of anything. Tell her you’re doing it and she has no choice in the matter, otherwise you’ll be calling animal control. PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN.

We literally took my MiL bird to a rescue yesterday. She’s had it 10+ years never even interacted with it but a handful of times, in addition to the filth of rarely cleaning it and never giving it anything but bird seed. Acted like she was going to DIE if we took the bird to the rescue, but my FiL and her went fishing and shopping like it wasn’t their problem. Yeah- I was the one who had to gather up everything and drive for hours to get him a better life. When Birdy saw the other birds, he came to LIFE, grooming, chirping, doing little twists and head swings…

We are kicking them out our house next to go live in subsidized retirement housing. There’s only so much you should put up with as an adult, and watching animals being abused IS NOT one of those things.

If you don’t want to call it in yourself, ask a friend, co worker, stranger to call it in for you
