I recently took these stem cutting from my money tree to try to propagate in water. I’ve had them sitting in water for about 3 weeks now and they started to developed tiny white dots which I was told were root! Today I noticed the base of the stem starting to turn dark brown, almost like it’s rotting. I change the water every 5-7 days and I even added hydrogen peroxide the last time I changed the water to promote more root growth, but I’m not sure if it caused more harm than good or if I’m just doing something wrong. Is this normal? I changed the water immediately after I noticed this. I’ve only been using distilled water for this. Any advice is welcome, I’m hoping it’s nothing and that it’ll keep growing 🙁

I’m not familiar with money tree props, have you done it before? You are able to propagate from just a leaf stem? I’m use to propagating things with nodes. This seems improbable to me. Although, even plants with nodes sometimes rot when I’m trying to propagate, even when I left them callous over before putting in water. Is this a type of plant that would do better being stuck back in the pot to root? I’m not much help, but interested in learning 😊

Is there a specific reason that you have rocks in the jar with the cuttings? I only ask because I am not familiar with a money tree plant, however I have only ever just had the water (and seen others) and nothing else in the jar for propagation. I’m not sure if that would make a difference.

I also agree with the other commenter, I don’t see any nodes on those cuttings, which is where new growth comes from when propagating to my understanding.

You dont have any growth nodes so its not going to root easily, and even if it did, youd just have a zombie leaf that only sustains itself. You need the section around the stem for it to produce new growth tips. Id recommend a rooting hormone when you try next and with money trees, I would cut a couple inches at least of stem below so the leaf connections arent also submerged.

If it just leaf and no stems I’ve never had luck propogating money trees that way

Always start with a clean jar and filtered water.

Hello! Hydro grower here – we use 3% peroxide to sterilize our resevoir but you need to be careful w h202. If it isnt diluted enough you can injure roots. Generally recommend 3-5 mL of 3% per gallon so anything more than literally a few drops potentially – POTENTIALLY – could harm the new roots.

Yes, I second the sterilization protocols. But it looks like the stem rotted. Definitely suggest looking into an aerocloner. Always roots 100% for me.

Not ruined! They just take like 4-6 weeks to show “popcorn” then the roots come in droves. Toss the gummy part and keep changing the water every few days
