Gardening expert and broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh has turned to his new YouTube channel, Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh, to share his five “must-have” perennials.

Mr Titchmarsh claimed that perennial plants form the “backbone of any garden” and, when properly maintained, will emerge every year with stunning foliage and blooms.

Perennials, like most plants, require planting in the right spot with suitable soil conditions to flourish. And if you achieve this balance, you’re likely to witness stunning growth season after season.

The gardening guru identified five plants in his video, though he insisted one particular specimen deserves a place in “every garden” – English Lavender “Vera”.

He explained: “Every garden should have this: lavender. The foliage, which is almost evergreen, smells like mentholyptus sweets [and is] really good for clearing your tubes.”

English lavender, which blooms from July to September, displays gorgeous pale pink, white or purple blossoms.

The species is irresistible to bees and emits a powerful aroma that will draw pollinators into your garden, reports the Express.

Mr Titchmarsh suggested positioning English lavender within your vegetable patch or flower beds in free-draining soil – wherever the specimen can enjoy abundant sunshine.

“It will make a lovely low border. It only grows about 18 inches high, that’s about 45cm in the lower varieties,” he noted.

He recommended purchasing the cultivars “Hidcote” or “Munstead”. Another variety featured on Mr Titchmarsh’s list was Geranium “Wargrave Pink”.

This resilient plant ranks among the gardening guru’s “all-time favourites” and he insists it’s a specimen he would “never be without”.

The plant reaches approximately 45cm in height and displays stunning, vibrant pink blooms throughout the summer months.

It’s ideal for cottage-style gardens and provides excellent ground coverage. Geraniums flourish in sunny spots and dappled shade whilst being available in numerous colours.
