In this video, I show how we grow microgreens using something you probably already have at home—ice cube trays! We used potting soil and a sunny window to grow mustard, radish, and broccoli microgreens over 8 days, and the results were surprisingly productive.

This method is low-cost, beginner-friendly, and a great way to experiment with growing food indoors. I’ll walk through the entire grow cycle from filling the trays and seeding to germination, light exposure, watering, and harvest. You’ll also see how to spot signs of when your trays are ready for light, how to fix droopy greens, and why orientation and watering really matter—even in tiny trays.

One of our favorite parts? You can pop the greens out like ice cubes, which opens up some fun and creative ways to plate or share your microgreens. Whether you’re just getting started or want to try something fun with kids or limited space, this video is a great introduction to growing microgreens with natural light and minimal setup.

All of the tools, seeds, and supplies we used are linked below. Let us know what you think in the comments, and happy growing!

  1. Great video and timing! I was just thinking about trying to grow some microgreens on my balcony now that it's warm out in Ohio. I actually have 2 ice cube trays, lol! Thanks! Love your book so far too! I got it last week. ❤📕🌱

  2. I love how she felt the need to tell us that if we don’t like microgreens, we can always use the ice cube trays for ice. This is the kind of knowledge you can only get on the Internet.
