My first attempt was more of an experiment with lots of mistakes, learnings and little concern for looks. Now I'm rebuilding it to look cleaner while keeping the same vibe and with minimum additional cost. Still work in progress but I'm happy with how it's going. Open to any feedback or suggestions.
- Removed the true land area (an ikea box with drainage layer&pump to empty it) → added shallow substrate pockets with Fluval Stratum & plants mostly semi-emersed.
- Reused the fountain pump for a drip wall background (got a used aquarium background for free, carved paths and added mosses)
- Added more plants (hygrophilia, ceratopteris, grass-like plants etc.)
- Now testing open-top with mist every 15 mins
Next steps:
– Fill left side with more hardscape and plants. I had to work on pump and mist maker so it's empty now.
– Find a better way to drip water over wood for more moss/epiphytes on the small tree trunk.
– Add snails, maybe amano or neocaridina shrimp — other animal ideas?
– Upgrade lighting (using a temporary aquarium light now)
– I'll add taller plants if no lid works. If not, I'll make an acrylic lid.
