I collected some seed pods off of a mountain laurel and desert willow and like… just cracked em open with pliers and stuck them in dirt out to see if they’d do anything. And now they’re doing something and I don’t know what to do next, I didn’t think I’d make it this far. There’s three mountain laurels coming up in that pot, and like 4 itty bitty desert willows. I’ve also got a Turks cap in a different tray making a go of it. Do i just leave everyone where they are? Gently get them out and put them in better containers?

Do you have an ultimate plan for them? Like a place you intended to plant them?

I have yet to start any natives from seed successfully. But if I would wait until they are almost too big for their container and then put in the ground where you want them, or else take them to a plant swap or plant stand.

I’m going to the plant swap the first Saturday in October at the Menchaca branch library.

Find a local plant stand and drop them off there.

Keep them watered, a soaking tray like with a seed starter kit is best but just keeping them moist all the time is fine, too. Let the grow at least 6-8 more weeks before repotting. Then keep them in those pots for the same amount of time. Then give them to new homes if you don’t have room to plant in the ground.
