A large jade plant I got off marketplace got damaged in transport, how can I propagate these? In regular soil? Cut them all small first? Remove the flowers? How many per pot? Thank you in advance for any advice!

I took a bunch of cuttings from my mother’s (very old, neglected) plant and rooted them in water first (she did the same thing for years). After they had a decent root system, I moved them to a succulent soil mix.

In my experience, they can tolerate some regular potting soil IF given amendments, i.e. sand, wood, etc for drainage. Straight potting soil tends to retain too much water, which jade doesn’t like.

No need to cut them small. It’s not a fast growing plant (at least where I live in the Midwest US, ymmv), so having larger cuttings would be advantageous. Then you don’t have to wait 10+ years to get a larger plant.

Definitely remove the flowers. The plant will direct its energy to making roots instead of flowering.

The number of cuttings per pot depends on the size of the cutting and the pot honestly. Some people take cuttings off the plant and tuck them back into the soil to make it appear fuller. So it’s okay to have some company 🙂

Overall, jade has been pretty forgiving. These cuttings look fantastic. You have some great material to work with!
