Looking for any feedback for our backyard/ side yard raised patio. Located in New England on waterfront (large pond). Looking to use it mostly for grilling and hosting food gatherings. Family with 2 toddlers.
Limited to spacing with septic tank toward the front of the house, wetlands at black boundary and slope toward walkout basement.

Awesome design. Excellent use of space & functionality
How do ya get into the pool?
I would have a full sized pool or none at all. This design makes the patio feel closed and cramped and the pool seems too small to use as the kids get older.
Reddit is wild. On one corner you have a ton of doomers talking about how America is a 3rd world country, life is shit, you can’t get ahead, don’t try, then you have stuff like this in the other corner.
i would want to be able to sit poolside off the patio with my feet in the water.
You are living the dream. Kudos to you. I dig it…redtwig and bloodtwig dogwoods like wet feet.
Lilacs, mock orange, and Carolina all spice. Mix in some evergreens. ..grow-low sumac isn’t very exciting, but it’s good on slopes and stay fairly short. American honeysuckle.
A custom pool that small will be regretted almost immediately. Remove the pool completely.
Without the pool its my opinion a really cool space.
That’s a dream
I don’t think you should have the fence right up next to the pool like that. You create only 1 real exit point at the gate, or else over the huge drop/ledge.
Shouldn’t the pool be fenced on all sides? With climbing toddlers this would make me nervous
Do you have conservation restrictions to contend with given the wetlands?
My favorite pool feature now that I’m older was one that had a pool shelf that was about 10” deep and 8’ long and they had a sort of half recliner in the water. You could lay and read the phone or sun yourself and the water was up to the top of the shoulder.
I would get a rectangle pool so you can use an auto cover. Less chemical usage, less heater usage, pool stays clean almost all the time, and most importantly, safety. It will keep the kids out of the pool without having to have an inconvenient fence (and easily defeated in a few more years) around the pool.
Someone else mentioned a baja shelf. I would also recommend that. Everyone loves it, but especially the little ones.
Apparently there are no pool safety laws where you live?
This is, indeed, a patio. Not to be overly critical, but some potential issues and improvements.
I’m not sure about the large pool of water – some places require it to be fully fenced in with 4-5′ high fences. Maybe remove most of it and replace with a shallow vertical waterfall feature close to the edge instead?
I would also change the stair lighting. If you keep the current style, with no lip, I’d suggest downward lighting from the sides instead. If there is a lip, you can do strip lighting under the lip so it’s more of an accent that doesn’t grab the eye.
I’d also use taller perennials so you can see the tops flowering. Upright ornamental grasses like switchgrass would also work for this purpose.
The TV will need to be protected from the back if you leave gaps in the walls.
Retractable rolling, folding, or curtain-style walls for the covered sections would allow you to use these areas in inclement weather, including winter if you put a heater out there. Mesh walls would keep the bugs out.
