With Hurricane Erin moving farther out to sea and sunny skies overhead, hundreds of thousands of visitors will be making their way down to the Shore in what is the second-to-last weekend before the unofficial end of the summer tourism season.
At just after 2 p.m., Shore-bound traffic was already heavy on the Garden State Parkway. There was a four-mile traffic backup between Exit 98 (Route 138) in Wall and Exits 91-B-A (Chambers Bridge Road) in Brick.

A traffic signal is down on Route 35 and Navesink River Road in Middletown. One southbound lane is closed, and the northbound shoulder is also closed as of 9 p.m. Friday.
In an unrelated issue, a traffic light is also down on Route 70. One left lane of three lanes is closed as of 9 p.m. Friday.
Route 70 was closed at Route 88 and Route 630 in Brick after a traffic light was reported down, according to state transportation officials. Expect delays.
At 7:20 p.m., the right southbound lane is closed to motor vehicle traffic, and the northbound shoulder is closed due to a broken traffic light on Route 35 in Middletown, just north of Red Bank. Expect travel delays in the area.
At 5:50, traffic on the Parkway is backed up for eight miles between Exit 100A (Route 33 East) and Exit 91 B-A (Chambers Bridge Road) in Brick. Expect delays.
A downed utility pole has forced authorities to close a section of Route 9 at Indian Hill Road in Toms River. Expect heavy traffic delays in the area.
Travel time from Exit 98 (Belmar) to Exit 82 (Seaside Heights) is almost 45 minutes due to heavy volume in the southbound lanes. Expect major travel delays.
A disabled motor vehicle in one of the eastbound lanes of Route 72 is blocking traffic, creating a severe bottleneck, according to state transportation officials. The stalled vehicle is located near Jennings Road. The center lane of three lanes is closed.
Southbound parkway traffic is heavy from its junction with Route I-195 in Wall to the exits for Toms River. Traffic is snarled for at least 15 miles with significant delays reported.
At 4 p.m., all lanes are closed on Route 35 in Middletown at Navesink River Road due to a traffic light that state transportation officials said is down.
Heavy volume is reported in the southbound lanes of the Parkway between Monmouth and Ocean counties. Expect significant travel delays.
At 3:30 p.m., state transportation officials reported that there is a 16-mile traffic backup in the southbound lanes of the Parkway between the exit for Belmar in Monmouth County and the exit for South Toms River and Beachwood in Ocean County.
Expect delays if traveling on Route 36 South from Sandy Hook to the Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge in Sea Bright.
At 3 p.m., southbound traffic on the Garden State Parkway from about Exit 89A (Route 70) in Lakewood to about Exit 83 (Route 8 North) is backed up for about five miles due to heavy Friday afternoon volume.
Traffic congestion in Toms River
At 2:40 p.m., there is a 1½-mile traffic backup on the Garden State Parkway southbound from about Exit 83 (Route 9 North) to about Exit 82A (Route 37 West) in Toms River.
At 2:57 p.m., state transportation officials reported that a pole had fallen on Route 9 north of Indian Head Road/Route 571 in Toms River. All lanes are closed.
At 3 p.m., there are delays reported on Route 35 South from about Bergen Avenue to Herbert Street/Route 528 in Mantoloking.
