Dig holes check soil foe grubs. That looks devastated from below. Does the grass just pull up?

Hey river neighbor. There two differing opinions recently: either lack of water combined with high heat, or disease. I think Pythium Blight has destroyed cool season grasses this summer. I also have TTF (Fescue) and the heavy rains this spring/summer followed by high heat & humidity and then a recent lack of consistent rain have proven an ideal environment for fungus to spread quickly. It’s brutal. I laid Disease Ex in May (helped a bit) and Grub killer in June, but it still happened to me two summers in a row. Get yourself a SunJoe dethatcher and an Echo spreader (don’t get the Scott’s spreader) and a couple bags of seed. It should regrow just fine, but like I said, we may be fighting a losing battle against the summer heat. Some folks have said that if you mow frequently, bag the clippings, and water consistently early in the morning it can help mitigate the damage. Good luck!!! And also, fuck the construction around Tysons. That shit is fucking brutal.

Mine looks like that. I think the lack of water and heat stress led to disease, half of my really dry areas look like plythium blight like yours.

Sorry, the mid Atlantic had a wet and humid summer, which is a perfect recipe for fungus disease. I’m pretty sure we had less rain in June & July last summer but hotter weather. I recall having over 100 degree temps for weeks last year.

“Brown patch is a common fungal disease of lawns that appears as irregular, circular patches of thinned, brown, or yellow grass. It is caused by the Rhizoctonia fungus and thrives in hot, humid weather, poor soil drainage, overwatering, and excessive nitrogen fertilization. To treat brown patch, improve cultural practices like proper watering and mowing, aerate compacted soil, and apply appropriate fungicides when conditions are favorable.”
I live in northern Va also, it’s more prevalent when you have tree canopy over/around your lawn. My service provider(Virginia green) started treating for it in the past two seasons after it smoked my entire front lawn. No issues since.

Send a sample to a qualified lab for diagnosis so you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with (it may not be one thing) and how to treat it.

Had the same thing happen to me in Charlottesville, went on vacation during the 100+ degree week and I couldn’t catch back up. Whole yard is basically wiped.

Treat prior to the fungus I believe, took this from their website this is the plan I have.
The “Virginia Green Estate Plan” is an enhanced lawn care program offered by Virginia Green, which builds on their Premium Program by adding four fungicide treatments for disease prevention, extra weed control, grub control, and lime applications to balance soil pH. This proactive, comprehensive program helps maintain a healthy, vibrant lawn by addressing critical needs throughout the year and can be signed up for by upgrading through the Virginia Green website or by calling the company directly.

I was good up til August. Most of my yard went dormant, but I’m watering enough to keep the crown alive. I’m planning to aerate, overseed, and top dress in a few weeks.

For everyone posting these pics of “the summer scorched my yard”, I too was affected. Does it just come back next year? Im planning to dethatch, aerate, and seed in September but will all my dead grass be back to fight next season? Chicagoland
