Thoughts on a Live Oak planted 13 ft. from a new construction foundation?

  1. Is this something to be worried about? My attempts at finding an answer to this have been mixed so far with some saying it’s fine while some saying it could cause issues down the line. Thought i would try here and see what the opinion on it is.

You’re fine. I have several live oaks about that far from the foundation.

Do you want to worry about it?

I am not worried about it.

New construction is significantly less susceptible to tree root damage.

    13 feet away is decent.

Have an arborist come look at them in 10 years and see if they think there should be any root diversion/barriers considered. Seriously TEN years at the earliest.

Regardless of any foundation worries, be prepared for leaves…

I don’t think it’ll cause any problems with the foundation, but be mindful of pruning it upwards as it grows to allow more light to get to the turf (looks like Bermuda). I had Bermuda grass under several live oaks that I let grow wide instead of high and ended up with bare dirt underneath that just eroded away and exposing the tree roots. I’ve steadily been working on reshaping the trees and replenishing the soil and replacing the grass with zoysia.

It is fine, but it will get big if it is water regularly. You just need to trim it back. The leaves are the bane of my existence.

Maybe in 20 years but the wildlife value will outweigh the cost of foundation repair exponentially

As long as it’s on the west side of your yard, you are good to go, it will give you allot of afternoon shade.

I have a 30+ yr old oak. About 15-18 ft from my home. No issues.

  11. Our live oak is 10 ft from the foundation and over 30 years old. We only had to put root barrier in last year to help with foundation issues on that side of the house.

I hear those leaves laughing at me when I try to blow them. Only a good metal rake works a little!

I would replace it with a Lacey Oak for a small backyard like that.
