A Prince Albert woman, 27, is facing several charges after an elderly woman was assaulted on Thursday in a Saskatoon community garden, according to police.

Saskatoon police say they were called to a community garden in Saskatoon’s Eastview neighbourhood around 5 p.m. CST on Thursday.

The elderly woman, 75, told police that she had been gardening when an unknown woman approached her and “began assaulting her with a gardening tool,” according to a police news release.

The suspect then ran away on foot. Police say they found her “in a nearby tree line” and arrested her.

According to the release, the woman allegedly punched a female special constable in the face while being booked into detention at the police station.

Police say the constable was treated in hospital for “a minor physical injury” and the elderly woman was also taken to hospital with “non life-threatening injuries.”

The Prince Albert woman now faces a slew of charges, including aggravated assault, assaulting a peace officer, breach of undertaking and breach of probation, the release said.

The 27-year-old woman also had outstanding arrest warrants in Prince Albert, police say.
