Johanna heads to Castlemaine and Dr. Harry encounters a bulldog ready for attack.

This week on Better Homes & Gardens Johanna heads to Castlemaine and Dr. Harry encounters a bulldog ready for attack.

Johanna – The Salvage Yard House
Building your own home isn’t the most eco-friendly undertaking, so it’s a great idea to reuse and repurpose where and when you can. This week, Johanna’s meeting a couple whose taken that logic to the extreme. Mat and Anna own a salvage yard in the Victorian country town of Castlemaine and they have built their own home on site entirely out of reclaimed materials, right down to the appliances. From a light fitting made from a canoe to an exterior made up of old street signs, Mat and Anna have used old objects in creative ways…and the finished result is a real stunner of a home. They’re taking Johanna on a tour of their digs and, along the way, they’re proving that the benefits of turning the old into something new are truly endless.

Colin – Pork Fillet with Jerusalem Artichoke & Parmesan Puree
If you ask Colin, winter is the best season of the year. Why? Because of all the delicious produce of course! This week, he’s cooking up one of his favourite winter veggies: Jerusalem artichokes. Pureed with onion, garlic, thyme and parmesan, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a tender pork fillet. Served with a burnt butter, sage and hazelnut sauce, who needs spring and summer when you’ve got dishes like this?

Dr Harry – Blower Biter Bulldog
Homeowners Tam and Dan finished renovating their dream home among the gum trees, in Sydney’s northern beaches, in 2021 and the finished result is everything they ever dreamed of. But the trees they love so much shed leaves everywhere…and Tam and Dan’s Aussie bulldog, Lou Lou, hates it when they try to clean those leaves up. Lou Lou attacks the leaf blower every time it’s turned on, turning simple garden maintenance into a total nightmare. Dr Harry’s here to help…but can he convince Lou Lou the leaf blower isn’t as bad as it seems?

Adam – Does Your Garage Need Organising?
If you’re lucky enough to have a garage, you’ll know it’s not just a great place to store your car, it’s a great place to store a whole lot of other stuff too…and that means it’s easy for it to turn into a totally disorganised mess! This week, Adam’s helping out some homeowners who have tried their very best to keep their garage organised, using old kitchen cupboards and mismatched shelving to keep everything tidy. But this system just isn’t working for them anymore and it doesn’t look great, either. So Adam’s sharing his top tips to clean up and declutter any garage. He’s got loads of space-saving storage solutions to suit any space, plus he’s even showing you how to make a fold-down worktable.

Clarissa – Nasi Goreng
Indonesian fried rice is one of the best comfort foods and it’s almost as popular here as it is in its home country. But how do you make authentic nasi goreng at home? Clarissa’s sharing her recipe, and it’s got everything you love about this iconic dish and more. With spicy chicken, fried rice, fresh veggies and topped with a fried egg, this dish is a must in your repertoire.

Juliet – Foot of the Bed Shoe Store Hack
There’s nothing better than taking your shoes off after a long day…actually, there might be one thing: a stylish seat-bench you can use to store your shoes in! Juliet’s transforming some boring storage racks into the most luxurious place to store your shoes. It’s the perfect piece of furniture for the end of your bed.

Charlie – Snake Plant Profile
You might think gardening and fashion don’t have much in common, but gardening is having a retro moment, like fashion often does. Right now, sansevieria, which you might know as snake plant or mothers-in-law-tongue, is making a comeback. Charlie’s profiling this hardy plant, exploring the many varieties to choose from and how easy they are to care for. It might be an old-fashioned plant, but Charlie will show you how great it can look in a modern garden.
