What’s happening to my African violet? The bottom leaves started turning yellow and now more farther up the plant seem to be, too. All the leaves and stems are still firm. Water when dirt feels dry, fertilize, and rotate the plant for indirect sun. Does it need a bigger pot? Some of the lower leaf stems seem a bit crushed against the lip of the pot.

  1. Leaves die off as the plant grows, just like the flowers don’t last forever. You can wait for them to completely die, and pull them off near the “trunk”, or break them off by the trunk, as they are now. I think a lot of people do this, because those leaves are draining nutrients from the rest of the plant. Eventually you’ll have a long bare “trunk”. You can replant it, and bury the whole trunk. This is a normal part of AV’s.

I agree with sheildor. You’ve got a long neck buried under all those old leaves. Look up the terms African violet long neck and African violet decapitation on you tube. Look especially at Grey turtle videos. I think you also have a few new plants suckering up. Nothing’s wrong. It’s just how African violets grow as they age and how to manage the plants for best health and best effect.
