Newbie here. Thanks to this sub, I decided to take control of my lawn this year. Always had a lawn service, but the past couple years, things have gotten out of hand. I live in Zone 6b.
I started detaching as shown in the pic. Should I leave the moss? It's a shady area and not a whole lot grows in my clay soil.
Can't wait to overseed!

Most lawncare services are just improper mowing; they usually don’t know anything at all about grass
Rake up the thatch.
Remove the moss.
**SEED TO SOIL CONTACT, COVERING THAT SEED** (with peat moss or light soil or something) **AND WATERING IS THE KEY**.
You’ll want to kill the moss with MossX or something. Then once it’s dead scrape it off the ground with a rake.
You gonna seed your entire lawn with that hand powered spreader?
I’d highly recommend not doing that.
I know Scott’s spreaders get shit on here because they suck for spreading fertilizer, but they are relatively decent for spreading seed.
I’d recommend at least getting a cheap push spreader to spread your seed as opposed to the hand spreader. You’re going to hate your life by the time you finish using that hand spreader.
The moss probably needs to go. I’ve always gotten by taking it if it’s not too pervasive.
You need to get that moss out….the dethatcher can help.
