Donegal woman to continue floristry tradition in Ballyshannon with new business

Ballyshannon florist, Sandra McGuinness, is continuing the flower tradition alive and well in Ballyshannon, following the closure of McDaid’s Flowers and Gifts.

Sandra had worked at the popular florist for 28 years, but after Ian McDaid decided to retire, Sandra has now plucked up the courage to open her own floristry business in Ballyshannon, Petals & Pets, at new premises on Main Street, opposite the Dorrian’s Hotel.

“The reaction has been overwhelming, with the well-wishes I have received,” Sandra told Donegal Live. “I am originally from Ballyshannon, so everybody knows me from working in the flower shop. The response I got, the cards I have received, have been phenomenal.”

Sandra’s new business will not only serve as a florist, but also has a small pet store and a fishing shop.

She admitted her knowledge in floristry has come a long way since she first started working for the McDaids.

“McDaid’s Store has been here in Ballyshannon for years. I started with them 28 years ago. He has now retired. It was a case of keeping the florist open, and it is what I am used to doing.

“I can’t remember what year the McDaid Store started, but they were very well known and had a lot of customers.

“When I came in, first of all, my interview was a very formal interview. I had a chat, and I was asked about a stand of flowers. The only thing I knew was a rose, and now I know everything. I just watched the arrangements and picked it all up.”
