My tomatoes have been putting out flowers for around a month now, but I haven't seen any sign of fruit. The flowers just get all brown and gross and wither away. Is there something I can do to encourage fruit?

Mine have only just started fruiting. I’m in the UK. One of my plants has no signs of fruit at all, and hasn’t grown in days.

    I can suggest tomato fertiliser?

How much sunlight does this plant get? Some varieties will need different light requirements. 6-8 is usual for fruiting. In addition, temperature fluctuations and pollination can impact this. I have had some weird temps and cold start to summer so my only tomato fruiting is my Swiss variety. Humidity can impact polllination. So you can try giving the flowers a good shake. Are the blossoms dropping?

Give the flowers a good shake to help pollinate. I got a cheap electric toothbrush and touch it to the base of the flowers so the pollen gets released super easy.

You might have to have pollinate them. You cab Google for detail, but basically you take a flower, pick all the petals off, and rub it into the other flowers..
    Good luck!

  5. What is your overnight temperature?

Mine really don’t like to do shit if it’s not 60+ at night

I feel like a lot of us have had a some what bad time with our tomatoes this year. I gave mine some plant food after they just had flowers for about a month then it sky rocketed and are now starting to produce fruit.

Many tomato varieties will drop flowers in excessive heat. How’s your weather been?

This was my plants for the beginning of the summer. I would give them a gentle shake and a little flick of the finger to the flowers. That should help them self pollinate. I also put up a shade for them. The high heat of the summer can kill the pollen before it can pollinate. Now I have a ton more fruit!

Pollen loses viability with day temperatures >90 F and night temperatures >70⁰ F.

    Edited temp ranges to widen.

I have just eaten my first two tomato’s that I have grown in all me 54years 😃 my other 2 plants, one has no fruits but flowers the other plant just started to produce. I don’t even know what type they are as they were free seeds stuck to a charity letter I got in the post. They were lovely.

I was told to routinely slap the crap out of my tomatoes to help them pollinate. Apparently some folks will just whack them with a stick, I usually just do a good firm pat like I’m petting the side of a large breed dog and I’d like to think it helps 😆

Joining in with everyone else to say try gently shaking the branches. But not too hard – personally I’ve had perfect looking flowers fall straight off the plant if I shake the slightest bit too hard!

shake them up. They aren’t pollinating.

  15. I usually tap the top of the stake or cage with a hand spade or something repeatedly to get the pollen to release
