The Garden Club of Lake Placid earned the opportunity this month to congratulate themselves on the success of their Four Seasons Fashion Show. The fundraiser will support placing a memorial at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts following its renovations to honor Ruth Hart for her contribution to the club and the community.

The Garden Club showcased upscale fashion in a fun and lively way to a sizable audience for the late afternoon reception and show at LPCA. The tone was set early in the lobby with music by harpist, Chris Clawson, as friends visited while snacking from a generous spread of appetizers provided by club members.

The lead-up to the event illustrated the reliance on a relatively small group to take on the huge project. However, when the membership includes a talented and experienced retired fashion designer, the show came together in a short timeframe. Roberta Musci, with her own collection of “robertannedesigns” and “Glamourmouse and Prettycat, et tu Bruiser Bruce,” provided the foundation of the show and the expertise to produce a fun and beautiful show. Designer John Michael, “Artists and Revolutionaries,” from Vergennes, Vermont, added original garments that are size free and eco-friendly.

The participation of local boutiques enhanced the fashion parade with attractive choices for men, women and children as well. The audience got a glimpse of garments from Lake Placid’s newer Main Street shops, Lucky Duckz and Adirondack Field. Others, more well-known as Cinderellas, Ruthie’s Run and Irish Treasures showcased their newest fashions for the Adirondacks. Bloom from Saranac Lake and the Birch Store from Keene Valley shared beautiful selections illustrating the depth of choices for shopping right here in our ADK backyard. Thrive and Thrift from Lake Placid demonstrated that personalized fashion can be found at modest prices! Models included a few professionals, but most were from the club or recruited family and community members. Some of the youngest models reminded us that fashion is fun with their bouncy steps and big smiles.

The fashion show included support from local artisans and merchants including James Barton, Denise Erenstone, Michael Raymaley, Darrah Cooper Jewelers, Pure Placid, The Bookstore Plus, The Curious Otter, The Wine & Spirit Shoppe and Terry Robards Wines and Spirits. Their contributions cannot be overstated to the efforts of the club’s outreach.

The Garden Club exists as an organization for those with a particular Interest in flowers and gardening. The active membership enjoys the social aspects of regular events and community focused activities. The club continues with maintenance of the Triangle Garden with this month’s after work session sponsored by the Grand Adirondack Hotel at their rooftop Cloudsplitter bar. This season, GCLP members resumed a pre-COVID service project at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid by adding colorful annuals to planters in the courtyard with generous donations by The Garden Center and Jim Girard Landscaping.

Back in the garden area, August is another transition month. Your to-do list might include:

– Remove dying foliage and flower stems from perennials such as foxglove, lilies and bee balm.

– Divide, transplant or remove in the next couple weeks those plants that are not well placed for sunlight needs; are encroaching on other less aggressive plants; or disappointing producers.

– Order bulbs for your garden beds and borders or for late winter forcing in containers.

– Save seeds by allowing some blooms to fully dry on the stem and then gently shake or separate the seeds.

– Photograph, map or label plant placements as you plan for next year.

Enjoy the color in your gardens, window boxes, flower beds, and even along roadsides now. We know what follows.
