I learned my lesson with a T-Post driver at the beginning of the month, struck my knee full force, wear protection and if you get distracted at all, stop. Have a good day, stay safe gardening!
Yeah, I wear flip-flops or I’m bear foot while I garden no matter what the chore. I know I should wear closed shoes but, I love my flip-flops and the dirt/soil in my toes. ❌⭕️🙏🏽♥️
I use my long sleves cotton loose shirts out in the garden not just for the sun but bugs. Hats with a mesh or tulle netting around the hat for face and neck. Gloves, and rubber boots when around water. You are so right on for safety protection. Thanks to your father as well.
I wear a small pair of bluetooth earbuds and then big safety earmuffs like you have overtop. Reduces the decibels and I don't have to be bored for 4 hours mowing. Good video 👍 I had Lyme disease last year. The ticks have been getting horrible here in NW PA past couple years. I sprayed 2 sets of clothes with permethrin this year.
This is a PSA for everyone! Not just the pale ghostly people but also my melinated friends you need to protect your skin too! As for myself I love my wide brim hat and IDC what anyone thinks cause I usually am in the garden plot alone but I wear 50 SPF arm gardening sleeves with the thumb holes to partially cover my hands under my gloves in the summer. I wear the SPF 50 hiking or fishing outdoor pants with the zip off legs parts and can get them from the thrift store to wear out there too. I do need to invest in some of those long sleeve sun shirts. I did get some for my SO to mow grass in but they are short sleeved and they love them because they are moisture wicking and cooling. But I always wear 60 or 70 SPF on my face and 100 SPF sweater proof sunscreen and deep woods insect repellant out to the garden. I’m in the Deep South and not only am I very fair skinned but got mosquitoes, deer flies and horse flies and those bites HURT! Not too worried about ticks even though we have a healthy deer population around here they haven’t messed with the garden this summer. But also as much as I have been wearing in these heat advisories I’m sure the ticks are like…. Ehhhh… no thanks 😂
I have to be extremely careful to be totally covered up due to ticks and sprayed. Got Alpha gal syndrome from a tick bite. Now I am extremely allergic to bee and wasp stings. It's always a challenge knowing I am going to the garden. But it won't stop me!
I have protected my hearing all my life, either by avoidance or with huge, honking ear protection. Now, at 73, my hearing is rated as someone in their 20s. I can still hear the squeaking of mice, the songs of birds, the alarm sounds on appliances. Some people make fun of me, and I don’t give a bleep. Long-sleeve shirts and a really wide brim hats with a neck panel are a necessity. I’ve got only one body and I want it to last as long as possible in the best shape as possible. Thanks for your cautions.
I grew up in Detroit and you are the first to tell me about snow blindness. Never heard of it but have noticed that the sun is supper bright with a fresh snowfall and the sun is beaming. Thanks for the advice.
Great advice. We can enjoy our gardens and be safe too. Old ladies like me look good in garden hats by the way! 😆 ❤ Your videos are very helpful. I enjoy watching your channel. Thanks Luke!
Thank you for finally wearing foot protection. I remember wincing when I saw you using sneakers to step on a spade shovel. I've hurt the arches of my feet while digging more times than I can count, even through I was wearing boots at the time.
Also, when it comes to hearing protection, you can double up by wearing both earplugs / earbuds, and the noise canceling earmuffs. Keep in mind though that decibels are a logarithmic scale, so you don't just add the dB ratings of the two together. If you combine 32 dB blocking earmuffs with 30 dB blocking earplugs, they will block a combined total of 34.1 dB. This is still better than wearing one alone.
Cumulative hearing damage happened to me from many years in steel fabrication. High pitched sounds like birds and watch alarms are mostly gone to me. Some women's voices are hard to understand too.
Luke, think about it this way. First off, poo poo on those naysayers and those who think safety is'nt cool or has to be fashionable. They are'nt the ones who have to live with a lifelong, traumatic, and devastating injury. I made the mistake of mowing with a pair of flip flops in 2004(I know srupid move. Was'nt thinking) l had my foot stuck under the cover because grass was clogging up under blades because of being wet(even more stupid). I hit a gatepost and lost part of my big toe right below the toenail. Stubby toe. If this was around, I could have thought more about what I was doing, hopefully prevented my accident, although I could have easily lost more of or my whole foot. You may well have saved the loss of many body parts and even lives. Yard machinery, heavy or not is extremely dangerous.
Thank you Luke, and I liked that your video repeated the one section, it was like getting a behind the scenes view of how you all communicate while making videos 🙂
Thanks for showing your brief blooper. Being safe is very important, being real is why we watch. Kudos to your camera person for being your inner voice.
Great advice! I admit I am to lax in not wearing sandals when I mow, or wearing eye protection or sunscreen! Looking forward to getting the seeds I ordered next week 😊

Don't forget to care for your back ❤
Hi! Did you add the link for the ear protection? I can’t find it. Thanks!

I always wear close toed shoes in the yard. You ever accidentally stand on a fire ant mound? I have 😂
Yeah I know someone who let their kid ride along and they fell off and lost their legs. So fun is no excuse to disregard safety

Oh sweet summer child… 5-7K to visit the ICU…

As a retired nurse, I can speak of having steal toes shoes. Oh man…a stretcher accidentally running over you foot/toe really hurts!!

Where are links to Free Country?
Thank you, Luke! That was very informative. I appreciate the reminders. I had a little trouble finding the links ?
