The dawn raids took place yesterday (August 19), with men aged between 22 and 30 arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation by detectives from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit.

The arrests form part of a courier fraud investigation into an organised crime gang thought to be impersonating police officers and coercing vulnerable people in Essex to withdraw and hand over large amounts of cash.

The men were questioned in custody, with officers seizing cash, digital devices and other evidence during searches in Camden, Marylebone, Northolt, and Welwyn Garden City.

Detective Sergeant Jon Saxby, from ERSOU’s Regional Organised Crime Unit: said: “Today’s arrests form part of our enquiries into a series of reports of fraud in the Chelmsford area. Our investigation is ongoing.

“Criminal networks involved in courier fraud can be incredibly convincing, especially to those who are elderly or vulnerable.

“I would urge the public to be vigilant against this type of criminality, and I would particularly encourage those with loved ones who might be more susceptible to courier fraud to make them aware of the potential theat.

“A police officer or bank employee will never ask you to withdraw and handover cash, if you receive a call from someone asking you to do this, hang up immediately and report it.”
