Welcome to Let’s Grow! I’m Michael, and today we’re doing something truly special. As a Landscape Architect with over 35 years of experience in Florida, I’m always searching for inspiration and exceptional examples of design that works with our unique environment, not against it. And today, we’ve found a true gem. We’re on location in Lake County, Florida, for an exclusive pro tour of the magnificent Discovery Gardens.
But I’m not alone! I’ve teamed up with an incredibly knowledgeable UF/IFAS Master Gardener to give you a dual perspective. You’ll get my take on the grand design—the structure, flow, and sustainable principles—and their expert insights on the 9 Florida Friendly Principles as well as resilient plants, soil science, and horticultural practices that make this place thrive. This isn’t just a walk in the park; this is a masterclass in Florida gardening, packed with actionable ideas for your own home landscape, whether you have a tiny balcony or a sprawling backyard. If you’re gardening anywhere in U.S. hardiness zones 7 through 11, the principles we’re covering today will be a game-changer.

Walking through Discovery Gardens is a beautiful, and educational, experience. Thank you for stressing the importance of avoiding herbicides in native plant areas. And perhaps the natural solutions like lady bugs can help protect other flowers as well?
