Gardeners will have the chance to dig into the world of forgotten and heirloom bulbs during a special program hosted by the Rockwall County Master Gardener Association on Sept. 19.

Author and horticulturist Chris Wiesinger, known nationally as “The Bulb Hunter,” will lead the workshop “Growing Forgotten and Heirloom Bulbs in Your Garden” from 10 a.m. to noon at Liberty Hall inside the Rockwall County Courthouse, 1111 E. Yellow Jacket Lane.

Wiesinger, founder of The Southern Bulb Company, has spent years collecting and cultivating perennial bulbs that thrive in warm Southern climates. His 2013 book, “The Bulb Hunter,” chronicles his passion for rediscovering rare flowers such as the red spider lily. He has been featured in The New York Times for his efforts to reintroduce these resilient plants to gardeners across the south.

The program will cover which bulb varieties grow best in North Texas, when to plant them and how to care for them in both landscapes and cut flower gardens. Attendees will also hear Wiesinger’s stories of bulb collecting and learn practical tips for incorporating bulbs into local gardens.

General admission seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis with check-in beginning at 9:15 a.m.

In addition to the presentation, heirloom bulbs will be available for purchase, and door prizes – including bluebonnet seeds – will be given away. Online orders will also be available for pick-up the day of the event.

Following the program, guests can enjoy a catered lunch from Tara Royer Steele, better known as “The Pie Queen.” Steele, author of “Keep Your Fork, There’s Pie!” and a frequent guest on NBC’s “Today” show, will provide lunch and pies to go.
