Hi! I just bought these two babies and I need advice on how to give them a healthy and good life so they can grow up! I know they are calatheas but I know nothing on how to take care of them. How often should I water them? Should I give them anything else than water? Thanks in advance!

The usual advice is to use rainwater or distilled water, they don’t like excess minerals. After killing several calatheas I’m now in the process of fixing the last one and it’s going MUCH better with distilled water. I add a Calcium/Magnesium supplement because they are needed to keep strong and healthy cell walls.

They hate soggy soil with a vengeance, so keep it moist but don’t overdo it.

They also like high ambient humidity. So humidifier or pebble tray below the plant.

First one is a Makoyana and supposed to be the easiest calathea to take care of. Second is Jungle Velvet and a bit more challenging. Both prefer higher humidity and don’t like tap water, so use rainwater or distilled / deionised.

They should never stay in direct sunlight. They need bright indirect light
