TV personality and host of BBC Gardeners’ World, Monty Don, who lives in Herefordshire, recommends starting lawn care at the onset of spring, before temperatures rise.

In a blog post on how to prevent an overly mossy lawn, Monty said: “Moss is always a symptom of poor drainage, made worse by shade. Even the best prepared soil becomes compacted by matted roots, rain and, especially, normal family use.

“The best grass likes very well-drained soil. Moss, for example, is always made worse by shade. The answer is to work on it at least once a year by sticking a fork in the ground and repeating the process every six inches or so.”

Monty’s proposed solution for addressing this involves a simple yet effective technique. He suggests “sticking a fork in the ground and wiggling it”, repeating every 15 centimetres.

On the issue of mowing, he wrote: “The grass will need mowing in March but do not cut it too short. Just give it a light trim for the rest of the month. The grass will be a lot healthier. You have to think positively.”
