Tumbling Tom tomato plants are perfect for small spaces, hanging baskets, or container gardening. They produce sweet, cherry-sized fruits that spill over the sides in an attractive cascade. Here’s how you can grow them successfully:
1. Choosing the Right Container Since Tumbling Tom tomatoes are compact and trailing, they thrive in hanging baskets or pots that are at least 12 inches wide with good drainage holes.
2. Selecting Soil Use a light, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. Adding compost helps retain moisture and provides essential nutrients.
3. Sowing Seeds or Planting Seedlings
If planting seeds, sow them indoors in early spring and keep them warm (around 18-21°C (65-70°F)) until they sprout.
If using seedlings, transplant them once they have at least two sets of leaves and the outdoor temperature stays above 10°C (50°F).
4. Sunlight and Watering These tomatoes love sunshine, so place them in a spot with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.
5. Feeding and Maintenance Once flowers appear, feed weekly with a tomato fertilizer high in potassium. Prune any dead or yellowing leaves to encourage new growth.
6. Harvesting Tomatoes will begin ripening within 8-12 weeks. Pick them when they’re fully red for the best flavor.
These small but mighty tomatoes are a joy to grow—whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener.

in some areas you can put your tomato plants outdoors a little bit earlier than others when we lived in Darbisha area as last frost date was around miday so quite late in season but in this area your last frost date is the last week of April so if you want to put plants outside that aren’t cold are it you can do that but always border on caution i’ve got these tumbling Tom tomato plants brilliant plants as well they came in these little pots and look how much they’ve grown i’m sure everybody’s tried to grow these before and they’re perfect they produce loads and loads of cherry tomatoes and it’s a determinate plant which means it only grows to a certain size flowers sets all its fruit and when the fruit’s ripened that plant’s finished but these plants go on for quite a bit longer than you’d think they’re also quite stable as well even though it’s very small plant you can see how thick that stem is already and they can get to around that thickness once the planted in the final area so perfect to put in containers or even hanging baskets and I think somebody asked me about the tumbling tom tomato plants in a container or basket and how many they should put in and my advice is just one you’ll be surprised at how big these plants get from what it is now it can reach something like that in width and then it will just grow down the outside of your container or your basket and they just have cascading cherry tomatoes so according to weather we’re not having any more frost from what I can see but I’m still going to border on caution i’m going to plant up a couple of these and we’ve got some containers that one as ver and they’re perfect for doing things like this because they just slot on top of that ver and the great thing about that is obviously if we do have a sudden frost I can just take them off and put them in shed ramp back just until it’s passed my main concern in this area is wind we get quite a lot of wind and although these are determinate plants and they only grow around this tall you still don’t want them getting battered by wind because wind damage is not good for your plants wind will dry the leaves out as well and cause you problems ideally when I do these I’ll put them in a container and then I’ll put a cane down each side and then tie it to that but only tie it loosely or you’ll damage that stem then if we do get any bad winds it’s not going to snap that stem and then ruin your plant but I also want to put these out for another reason because on a couple of plants that I’ve got they’re starting to produce flowers and you can pinch them flowers off if you want but when it comes to these sort of plants that only produce a certain amount of fruit you’re better off just letting them grow and also if you look you can see hopefully just there there’s a little side shoot coming and you’ll get these side shoots popping up on your plant all the way through here and you need to leave those on on an indeterminate plant which means a vining tomato plant that will just carry on growing and growing constantly all year you have to pinch those off otherwise the plant just goes crazy and it’ll have stems shooting off in all different directions and it gets a little bit out of control but when it comes to determinate tomato plants or bush tomato plants you need to leave those on because the more side shoots you get from these plants the more fruit you’re going to get and I believe that these particular plants can produce 90 to 100 fruits per plant and that’s a lot so I’ve bought six of these and I’ve got four containers to put on that verer so just for now I’m going to plant two and I’ll see how they get on but I also know as I’ve previously said that if the weather does turn I can just up those off and put them in shed out of harm’s way so that’s what we’re going to do and I’ve also got some spinach and we tried to grow that as multisome spinach but unfortunately I don’t think a lot of the seeds were viable so we’ve really got one to two that came up in each cell but we can still grow those as individual plants so I’m going to pop them in that bed outside get that spinach on and get two of these in containers and that’s a little bit more for this container garden and if you’ve never grown spinach before and you want to grow spinach now is the best time to grow it because it’s very susceptible to bolting when it gets too hot so you don’t really want to be growing that during eer summer because it won’t last 5 minutes so if we put some in now and get it growing we’re going to be able to pick quite a few leaves off them spinach plants before they go to seed and there the containers that we’re going to be putting them in and as I said they just look over that verer cuz they’ve got these cutouts in them and they’re not a bad size so we’ll take a couple down and get them on the way and I’ve also got this bed as well and we’ve put multi-sewn onions in there and they seem to be doing all right but we’ve also got these onion sets that we’ve pre-planted and you can see there’s lots of shoots coming up on these now but also look at all the roots that’s coming out at bottom so they’re good to go as well and you can see that everything in this propagator is looking really healthy so we need to get these peppers potted on as well at some point and this is one of the plants I was talking about another cherry tomato plant but in flower already and something else I noticed the other day was these strawberries and they’re now starting to flower as well i’ve also drilled some extra holes in these containers just to make sure they drain properly now I’ve part filled it i’m going to add a bit of this Miracle Grow slow release [Music] fertilizer we’ll get a good amount in there and then I’m just going to mix that in and then top this off so I’m just going to take a scoop out at the center of there to accommodate this plant so I’ll take this out and we’ll see what the roots is like and you can see for a small plant it’s definitely time to move so pull those roots away we’re just loosening those off like that and then we’ll get it in i’m going to push it down keep it straight and then firm around it and that’s putting a bit of a gap between rim of this pot and the compost so water’s not going to just run off your container plants are going to dry out a lot quicker than others we’ve got us labeling so that’s his first container cherry tomato plant on its way we’ll just give that a really good watering and then I’m going to pop it back on that balcony so same again and we can see that that’s pretty much depth we’re looking for so let’s check this one out as well same story again lots of roots building up so free all of those away you’re not going to hurt your plant when you do that and then we can get it straight in and because these are determinant plants we don’t need to bury them any deeper cuz first off they’re not leggy and secondly they are very stocky plants anyway so firm down it’s going to make us plant more stable and that is a second one done now that them containers are full and they’re slaughtered onto that ver even the strongest wind is not going to blow those off so we’ll see how they get on for next few days and if they do all right we’ll set up another two and this is the spinach we’ve been growing there’s a couple of plants come up in odd cell but not what I was hoping for not everything goes exactly how you plan but I’m going to still take these plugs out and plant them as they are we need to get that spinach going as soon as possible so I’ll just pop one of these out carefully as well we don’t want to break it all up you can see it’s got plenty of roots so we’ll make a nice deep hole and just drop that straight in same with this one straight in push it down so we’ll just carry on and get the rest in so there we go a couple of minutes and we’ve got six homegrown spinach plants aren’t we and look at that lettuce that we put in not too long ago it’s doing really well it’s now ready to start picking leaves cuz we’re treating that as cut and come again so if we pick the leaves off they’ll grow back and those carrots are looking really healthy as well and also those spring cabbages seem to have picked up even more so another quick easy job done and we’ve got a couple of tomato plants on the way fingers crossed we don’t get any more frost but according to this area as I said earlier we shouldn’t be getting any more at all we just got to watch out for that wind and I did notice something and I don’t know if anybody else has noticed the same thing over the last few days it’s very early in season but I saw a cabbage white last year they came really late but this year’s weather is nowhere near as bad as it was last year so unfortunately looks like that cabbage white’s around already so what we’re going to have to do is maybe put a couple of canes where we got those cabbages and then put a bit of netting over top we don’t want them landing on his cabbage leaves and laying eggs otherwise they’re going to be covered in caterpillars and they’ll slowly but surely destroy all those leaves on your plants but that’s a job for another day so I’m happy with progress of this container garden so far and every few days we’re adding something new if you want to see what else we’re going to be planting as we approach May then please hit that subscribe button press that notifications bell and I’ll see you on the next one enjoy your Easter holiday take care

Yaaaaaa another great video. My Tom's are only 1 inch tall is it to late or will they still grow thanks
We’ve had the cabbage white here in derby in the last couple of weeks. Iv got my brassicas all covered up. They’re not going to have my brassicas this year I’m well prepared for them.
Great video , have you got your tomato plants from the garden centre or grown from seed? Iv got loads inside grown from seed, in my opinion it’s a bit early for me to risk putting them outside yet I don’t want my hard work going to waste .👍
Great Ivan I love your videos. Little bit tough here in New Brunswick. Our last frost date is 11May
Great stuff
I've looked all over for seeds and plants of this tomato but not found any, where did you buy yours from x

Thanks for the advice Ivan. I'm growing tumbling toms after seeing yours last year. I was going to plant two in each basket so I'm really pleased I watched this episode. You always offer such good advice 😊
I really look forward to your videos Ivan

I’ve grown these tomatoes for years, it’s too early to put them outside just yet where I live.
😅great video thanks
Great video as always can I ask when you planted the spring cabbage. Happy Easter to you and your wife 😊
Thank you for such an informative video. It's my first time growing anything in my ground floor flat and space and wind are an issue where I live. Your video made me feel more confident getting started and all questions answered! 🎉
Cabbage whites destroyed my broccoli last year
Your plants are looking great! Yes I also saw a cabbage white butterfly today. Thanks for the tomato info. 😊
Thank so much for this helpful information. I didn’t plant my seeds in time, and am going over the varieties available at a local sale. This is one of the varieties available and will be perfect for my containers outside my apartment here. US, outside of Boston, just about time to plant.
I started thes from seeds. Doing well but aren't bushy like that or thick stalk. They seem to be growing tall.
Great effort and Video
Your lettuce trough is fantastic! How on earth do you keep the slugs off? That lot would be demolished in a night here.
