Located in south western Ontario, Canada – does anyone have an idea what this is? It’s popping up in clusters all over my lawn and I want it gone!

I think it’s nutsedge but someone please correct me if I’m wrong – I have this same thing.

Nope, not nutsedge. All good though, we all got areas to learn. Nutsedge typically grows in pods of 3-7 leaves, has shiny surfaces, and is light green.

What OP has here is coarse fescue (or clumping fescue, forage type ta fescue, etc). There isn’t a great way to selectively spray to eliminate it and not hurt your grass. Your options are to dig it out and fill with soil/sand mixture, spot spray with glyphosate and then reseed when your good grass dies, or apply glyphosate directly to weed leaves. Glyphosate is non-selective, so it kills whatever green it touches. To make sure you only get it on what you want dead, you can use a paint brush or diy tongs + sponges as has been recommended on here. If you just want to buy something ready made, I have found [the lawn liberetor](http://www.nicegreenlawn.com) really useful to get rid of dallisgrass and quackgrass this year. It went faster than using a paintbrush and with less mess. Can’t comment on how the tongs + sponges goes, but at least a couple of commented it may result in more collateral damage.

    Good luck!

Gonna have to spot treat with roundup and reseed the spots.

Coarse / clumping fescue. You have to dig it out or nuke it.

The devils lettuce, and not the good kind

  6. Coarse tall fescue.

There are no herbicides that target it as it’s a grass, just an undesirable one. You now have a few choices:

    1. Spend time ripping it out by hand
    2. Spend time wiping glyphosate carefully on the blades
    3. Spend time reseeding after spraying glyphosate on the patches

I get that stuff (clumping fescue) in my backyard. I just pull it out – with varying success. I have bluegrass and it will fill in the bare spots.

Clump fescue. I have been using a paintbrush to ‘paint’ roundup within the visible circle/clump, waiting 3-5 days, and then digging it up. I didn’t want to spray and risk hurting surrounding grass, and it’s much easier to dig up once it’s dead.

I pull mine out. Pull the outer the leaves up towards the center, then the whole clump comes out pretty easy. Works better after some rain.
