It’s a dead bush; very different from the others.

    It’s dead.

Fyi boxwoods are tough because they like basic soil while almost everything else we use likes acidic soil

Also they’re susceptible to 8.65 billion pests and diseases.

Also they smell like cat piss, that’s why deer don’t eat them

why is there a plastic tarp on the ground under it??

    Maybe try a Brazilian approach?

If nothing has changed…it probably got sprayed to death by a cat…or cats. It usually starts on one side and very soon kills the whole thing. Cat marking will kill an established shrub quickly.

You sound like my kids when they saw their goldfish floating in the tank. Pretty obvious. Replace.

Never plant shrubs near a foundation.

It looks like all 4 are Boxwoods & although they are generally pretty hardy & tough, this might be the dog’s favorite place to pee or something, bc it looks pretty well smoked… You could TRY waiting & see if it puts out any new buds, but personally I’d bite the bullet and just replace it now.

Look above, do you have a child’s bedroom window above that bush? Are they peeing out the window instead of going to the bathroom in the middle of the night?

I’m way too immature for this title.

Furthest two look healthy. The brown one is dead – pop it out and replace. The closest one looks kinda yellow in comparison to the further ones. Maybe when you replace the third, remove the landscape fabric, add some good compost to the new plant and maybe give the whole bed a top dressing with compost or some liquid fertilizer and make sure it gets watered sufficiently for the first few months.

That thar is what the pros in the business call “expired”. Those are all boxwoods, but it’s a little tricky to discern if they are all the same cultivar or not. The second one from the corner of the house looks like it’s a different cultivar from the others given that it has a more upright habit.

Boxwoods are tricky to grow because they need the perfect balance of that ever elusive “moist but well drained loamy soil”. Here’s what I can tell you about what I see in your photo that is problematic with boxwoods. Firstly….they’re boxwoods. Seriously, looks like there’s a relatively heavy layer of wood mulch around them which can breed soil fungus. But worse, I see plastic on the ground which prohibits transportation in the soil and really breeds fungal diseases. Boxwoods must have good air exchange in the root zones and too much moisture and soil borne fungus will kill them quicker than anything. You can have the wood mulch around the plants, but it has to be a very light layer over the roots.

The wheat brown color tells me that the dead boxwood most likely succumbed to an anaerobic fungus like phytopthera. The conditions I described above could certainly have led to an outbreak of this fungus in the soil.

Hard to say. You keep showing pictures of your plants.
