It was perfect when I got it. It may have been over watered (in an irrigated part of a garden) but other than that I have just left it. The large one was about half the size and the small one was just a tiny pup when I got it. The small one looks healthier however is still showing some corking.

    Looks like there is an ongoing fungal attack that has penetrated deep into the column on the left. The light tan is scarring from where the fungus has been beaten back by the plants immune system and the subdermal dark discoloration is evidence of the deep ongoing infection.

    Its very possible this was caused by the plant getting hit by a sprinkler repeatedly. Cacti really need to have their soil fully dry between waterings and they dont respond well to being in humid conditions all the time.

    Chop clean sections to save with a sharp knife. Sanitize the knife before and between cuts with alchohol.
