Going to seed around the tree this year but there is a lot of roots so I need to decorate around the root system so I don't suffocate the tree but have a nice area. Any suggestions on how to deal with so many roots without suffocating the tree with mulch?

Thanks in advance!

The tree is almost literally in the street! It should be removed !

We had the same problem 13 years ago. We planted hostas and finished off with river rock over landscaping fabric. Hostas did well and rock covers the roots. Still looks good.

Add mulch, dont seed it. Its struggling enough without plants on top of its roots taking nutrients and itll struggle more when someone weedwhacks the grass and scars the trunk every couple weeks.

Try wild geranium. It’s native, it grows around everything, is wildly tolerant of different soils and is a pollinator magnet.
