OK, so I’ve been trying to propagate a smoke tree in my yard. I set out to do 15 or so stems. So far the success rate has been less than desirable, even though I picked semi-soft stems. I’d say I may have three at the most four that appears to have survived. The question is, when is the right time to move them into their own pots? I have attached a few photos. It’s probably been at least six weeks or so… I don’t want to lose any of those that have survived this far. The attached photo shows new stems growing primarily out of the top of what seems to me a dying stem. Any advice is welcome, ty in advance.

  1. What was your full protocol for doing these? Timing, handling, sterilization, wounding, hormone, media, temperature, etc.

I’ve not done theses but according to a trusted source, (Mike Dirr) softwood cuttings in June can be done with a quick dip of 1000ppm IBA in. Peat:perlite and mist. He recommends that rooted cutting be overwintered in flats and not moved up until new growth starts. Others have used much more complicated dips but it does appear that timing is critical with early June being much better than July for success.
