An eyewitness said they rushed out when they saw the smoke near Wasdale Court, Warndon, and saw the owner rushing back shouting “That’s my house”.
Nobody was hurt during yesterday’s fire (Saturday)involving conifer trees and a wooden fence with multiple worried neighbours making 999 calls.
A witness, who did not wish to be identified, said: “At around 6.35pm yesterday I began smelling what smelled like a barbecue and I thought nothing more of it.
“But as time passed, the smell became more pungent and less like a barbecue and more like a fire.
“I looked out my window to see a blazing fire in the next court, surrounding the nearby courts in smoke.
“As I left to take a closer look, the fire began to spread to the trees and closer to the bushes.
“A man walked past, shouting, ‘that’s my house, that’s my [expletive] house’.
“I began talking to a local who lived nearby, and he said there were rumours of kids causing the fire
“The owners ran back to the house to see if anyone was inside.
“I’m not sure if there was, but at 6.47pm the fire brigade arrived and launched into action, putting out the fire by around 6.53pm.
“I was quite worried and scared, especially seeing as it might be kids that may have caused this fire, so what’s stopping them from doing it somewhere else and accidentally injuring someone or worse?
“It was the backyard of a house, but we thought it would spread to the house from the trees.
“It had fully engulfed the backyard.
“I think everyone was okay, but it was very, very scary.”
