Just wanted to share with y’all.

Bought the house 6 years ago and this yard was primarily patchy weeds. We’ve got about 47,000sq feet of fescue now, no irrigation, and I’m insanely proud of how it is holding up this year. Far from perfect, but proud.

Still regularly fight Virginia Buttonweed and Crabgrass that venture in from the neighborhood field about 200’ up, and absolutely have some heat stressed spots… but thankfully we’ve avoided Army Worms this year that wreaked havoc last summer.

I’ve adjusted to cutting at 4.5” every 7-10 days and it seems to be grateful. Seeding and aeration is right around the corner again!

So how did you keep it so nice over the summer with no irrigation? What were your spring and summer applications like?

I see so many fescue lawns that don’t have irrigation and of course they do get brown and crispy in the peak summer but they end up surviving just fine.

My personal preference is I would rather have a lawn than isn’t pretty for 2-3 months of the year and then gorgeous during the period of best weather.

  3. What part of NC, I’m in the Raleigh and haven’t been able keep mine remotely as nice.

Same here, also in NC. All the rain we’ve had has kept my fescue green all summer. I usually just let it sleep this time of year and focus on my flower beds but it just kept chugging along.

Due to the amount of rain this summer I didn’t have to water one day at all. I fact there has not been a dry week since April 11th

Heat, sure, and impressive nonetheless! but based on past rather at RDU, yall have had A LOT of rain with near perfect timing, very lucky there! That fescue wouldn’t be thriving without it and no sprinkler…
