Thanks for the kind words and support 😁🐕❤

  2. I always use shredded leaves in my raised and ground beds, and i have really healthy soil.

Btw, can you make a video showing us your raised bed soil recipe if you don't have one already?

  3. We have an Amish community in the area that advertises “free sawdust” at the corner where their wood mill is. Is sawdust good or bad for a new garden? I’m the classic newbie gardener and need all the help I can get!

  4. I’m using horse bedding/wood shavings over my raised beds. It looks nice and it works as a way to keep the moisture in the soil, but not sure how it compares to leaves or wood chips. I think anything is better than bare soil. I learned a lot about wood chips in soil though. Thanks!

  5. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Tuck!

Thank you, James, for this wonderfully helpful and informative video!

  6. I have exactly the same sandy soil at my place in Central Otago, New Zealand. I’ve laid woodchips down for four years now … really deep. The black soil under it is incredible! Also started using chopped dead leaves in my garden beds … spot on! Works beautifully. Gets to minus 10 Celsius in winter and 32 plus in our very dry summers. Yes wood chip mulch for my and chillies. Brilliant advice! ❤

  7. I use leaves, wood chips and grass clippings( no herbicides) for all my veggies, bushes, and trees. Chips go on my bushes, trees, perennials, and tomatoes, peppers, and vining veggies.Leaves and grass clippings go on my other veggies. The chips are more dense than leaves and grass so less need for watering. And the great thing is the chips from tree trimming outfits as well as my neighbors leaves and grass clippings are free for the taking! What a deal especially in these inflationary times! Let's goooooooooo!

  8. So it’s really interesting, the academic literature about juglone and black walnut finds correlations between high feeding crops doing poorly in the presence of juglone in the lab only. In the wild, like in the garden or any non lab setting, juglone has not been linked with inhibiting high feeding crops. It is unfortunate that this point about only having correlations in the lab has been misconstrued by the wider public. All in all if you use black walnut chips and mix them in with other chips, you will likely have no tomato problems.

  9. The fact is that any decomposing material will sequester nitrogen from the soil temporarily. It will still release that nitrogen back into the soil when the decomposition is nearing completion. Some materials are so high in nitrogen that they'll be a net positive contribution to the soil regardless. In my garden, I'm adding so much nitrogen anyway that it doesn't even matter if a few woodchips accidentally get mixed with the soil.

  10. I like to get them broken down from my local firewood person, it's like a medium fine mulch. I find it easier to work with. I guess it's pretty much the same but smaller. As far as wood chips go. Good to see you James, I bought my shirt, miss the Buck so much. Will you get another pup to learn from you? I sure hope so. 😊❤❤❤❤

  11. I added beds without considering mowing the path. I put down chips to suppress the grass. They decomposed and all the rain gave me a bumper crop of weeds.

  12. No idea where to post this but I bought James’ fertilizer – I am thrilled with the results. A couple weeks ago my plants were starting to succumb to blight and were “ok” looking but after a severe “pruning” per James’ advice AND the fertilizer I’ve had HUGE harvests in the last couple days and the plants themselves are making a major comeback! HIGHLY recommend!

  13. Hi James! You're my very favorite gardener on Youtube! I learn a ton from you! Question…do I need to be able to pick up the wood chips or do the tree surgeons every bring them to you? If you pick them up, how do you do that? A truck and a tarp? Thanks!

  14. I've been using wood chips as mulch in both vegetable gardens and flower gardens for decades. Any nitrogen draw is minimal. And if you're using the proper amounts of fertilizers…the benefits of wood mulch more than outweighs any cons. I use a mixture of wood shred, wood chip, coconut chip and cocoa bean hulls. It's fabulous.

  15. It's wonderful to discover your channel. I have watched and learned a lot from it. Thank you for sharing, thank you!

  16. I always ask the tree co. not to give me oleander. it's very poisonous. Once it's composted it's supposed to be safe, but I'd rather not take the chance

  17. My city has green bins where composable stuff should be put so collecting leaves is less trivial than it would have been without that. At least woodchips show up free every so often on facebook market place or kijiji, but moving woodchips around the garden is exhausting and I'm lazy. I wish there were an easier option that's just as good but aside from just having really large trees that drop lots of leaves, I can't really think of anything.

  18. Cedar mulch works well around mature fruit trees here in high desert – our temperature extremes, high winds, and droughts create a need for 3" deep. Plus cedar is naturally flea repellant, so if the animals hang out under the shade of the fruit trees, they won't be prone to pick up fleas there.. Fresh wood chips messed up my plants for lack of nitrogen, because I didn't give them a year or two to age first. Lesson learned!

  19. Thank you James for your explanation about how to use wood chips correctly. I’ve been using chips ever since the Back to Eden movement became popular and it really works. I use leaves for making compost which goes on top of my garden. Then a thick layer of wood chips over the compost as a blanket for Winter. In the Spring every bit of the leaves and compost is broken down, the soil is all fertilized for planting.
I’m interested in adding a drip irrigation system next Spring. Can you recommend an easy one for me? I’m 75 and hand watering is a pain😅
Also, could you share some video footage of your new place? Would love to see all the improvements you’ve made and how you overcome any problems.

  20. For a quick and easy mulch I’ve used the pine bedding they make for chickens or small animals. Comes in a lightweight bale and goes a long way for minimal investment.

  21. Hi, from UK, 👋
Does the type of tree woodchip matter? I know that you have spoken about it. Though, I'm thinking of conifers. Our woodchip is mainly composed from. Thank you 🌞

  22. In my experience what loves wood chips the most is wood lice a.k.a.pill bugs, which will do much damage to leafy anything. Diatomaceous earth helps somewhat.
Like James, I use hardwood mulch in landscape beds.
