From curbside find to DIY! 😍 I spotted some wooden pallets on the side of the road and immediately saw their potential for the next step of my balcony makeover. With a little creativity and help from @homedepot and @rustoleum, I transformed them into beautiful planter boxes using Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain Spray in Dark Walnut for a rich, long-lasting finish! Since this project is going outdoors, I also topped it with a coat of Spar Urethane for extra protection. #HomeDepotPartner #THDRustOleum #SprayNewLife

What is he doing? Welcome to part two of my balcony makeover. And you know what? Sometimes turning other people’s trash into treasure is what you need to do. And in the first part, we transformed this chair and table set, which looks so great on the balcony. And I had this idea to add planter boxes. So, I headed out to the Home Depot to pick up the Verithane Premium Fast Dry Wood stain spray along with a Gator sanding block. This is just going to make the process so much easier. Trust the pallets. Those were just on the side of the road. Yes, just on the side of the road. So, I threw them in the back of the truck and disconnected the wood using a hammer. It was pretty simple. And I think removing the nails was my favorite part, oddly enough. I then squared off all of our wood pieces, just cutting off any really rough edges or just cutting them down to size. And then it was time to assemble. So, I thought adding the sides first would make it really easy to add the fronts and backs of the box. So, I screwed on the sides there and then added on the front and back panels. Just screwing directly through the sides and into the front and back to create a box. And because this wood is a little dinged up, I definitely want to go in with my Gator hand sanding block, which I love these so much. They are so comfortable in your hand. They have a hook and loop attachment, so you just slap the little sandpaper on there and it just makes an ease of surface prep. It’s so simple and easy. As you can see here, I’m doing this in real time. Takes off all of that gray color. And then I’m going in with the star of the show, which is a Verthane Premium Fast Dry Wood stain spray in dark walnut. Yes, I said spray. And yes, you’re seeing me spray on wood stain. The application itself is so effortless and fast, and the coverage is amazing. The other thing I love is it’s great for intricate projects because you can really get into all of those nooks and crannies with the stain. And after a couple minutes, you can wipe away any excess to reveal the finish, which is not only stained, it’s also enhanced. And I added a coat of spar urethane over top since this project is going outdoors. I found these brackets at Home Depot as well, which hung my planter box perfectly. I added in these plants, which also were from the Home Depot. And that is how I finished off my balcony planter boxes. These look so, so cute. I might need to make a third for the other side. What do you think?

  1. Those pallets are so prone to termites, as they aren’t treated. Think twice about using them in or near to your home.

  2. Those black screws look suspiciously like drywall screws, which are not meant for outdoor use. They will rust. You need something galvanized at the least.

  3. Lovely! I"ve had window boxes on balconies before, and I will tell you they will fall when they're heavy. Just for safety's sake, add one more bracket in the center. I've had them tip and fall out of the brackets, though I cannot tell you how on earth it happened.

  4. That's dangerous!
The planters are not assembled securely. Although they are supported by the brackets from the bottom, they will get so heavy after a rain that the front of the box might break off and fall on somebody's head.

  5. Love the planters! So clever to use pallets. Where did you get the brackets? In the garden department or another section? They look adjustable too but I couldn't be sure. I need them! I drill drainage holes in my wooden planters then line them with a potting soil bag, slit open & cut to size and stapled. I puncture holes in the plastic over the box holes too. It saves the wood from rotting. I refresh with a liquid stain every spring but when I run out I'm getting the spray stain. It looks amazing 🤩

  6. 🙌🏼U CAME IN THE CLUTCH BABY!😅 I've been trying to figure out how to hang some on my brick wall, even google 😢didn't help! THOSE BRACKETS ARE PERFECT!!! Homedepot I go!😘 THANK U BABY!
