QUEENS – The NYC Parks Department has ordered the operators of the Sunset Community Garden in Ridgewood, Queens, to leave the city-owned site by September 3, The New York Post reported.

The action follows months of controversy and complaints that the garden’s organizers promoted anti-Israel messages and required attendees to pledge support for Palestine. The department revoked the group’s license in May for breach of contract, but a court-issued temporary restraining order in June had allowed them to remain. That order has since been lifted, permitting the eviction to move forward.

The garden opened in September 2023 on an unused lot at Grover Cleveland High School as a non-political initiative but later became a hub for anti-Israel activism. The space features a section labeled “Poppies 4 Palestine” and altars dedicated to trans activist Cecilia Gentili, after being renamed Jardin de Santa Cecilia earlier this summer.

The garden’s organizers have filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the Parks Department, which is still pending.
