Thank you Brian. I hope you had a wonderful vacation. I do have your book and it’s VERY informative! 🌼🌺💚🙃
My tomatoes are done! The roma tomatoes were the best but the rest no so much. I really need to arrange some shade for next year and to connect the drip! I know, ridiculous 🙄! Thank you Brian! Have a blessed day!
Brian, i have basil planted next to my tomatoes, worked at keeping green horned worms off tomatoes, but i found a green horn worm eating my cucumber! i have cucumbers, tomatoes, and basil all within a couple of feet of each other, is that too far apart?
Great video! Saved this one to my garden folder!!!
I almost had a heart attack earlier this week. I had a tomato hornworm on one of my tomatoes. I have a huge basil plant in the same pot, so I can't imagine how it managed to be there.
This is the first year that I had tomato hornworms. I found one on a tomatillo! And another on my tomatoes! I pulled them off and smashed them! I was lucky because I haven't had any more.
Brian, do you have a guide to flowers that go well in the southern California garden? I had some California poppies from last year produce seed and migrate across my yard (which I wanted) but they're in my garden. I'm thinking it's OK but I don't know for sure. I love the look of flowers in and around the garden but most of the guides I can find are not for our dry, hot climate. Thanks for the info on tomatoes. I'm thinking the cucumbers I sowed last year prevented some green beans from sprouting!
Good news/bad news, Brian. I only have 2 tomato plants. A Park's Whopper and a Hardy cherry, each planted in a large wooden container with Basil. The Hardy is awesome and producing like mad. The Park's has given me some nice fruit when I can get to it before the deer. However, I have taken 5 horn worms off of the Park's in 2 days. Now, they were on the plant farthest from the basil and I have had none since. And, thankfully, the plant has recovered fully from the damage.
Next year, massive re-do for the entire garden. I will be trying more of these suggestions. Thank you.
Great video learned alot
Great video thanks for sharing 😊
I have heard the advice regarding hornworms, basil and its improvement to tomato taste for as long as I can remember. However, this is the first year (out of 28 years of gardening) I tried to follow the advice. Unfortunately, it did not stop my tomatoes from being completely destroyed by tomato hornworms this year. Never had the hornworm issue before or until I tried co-planting basil. Maybe it's coincidence or maybe the Holy Basil I planted was the issue (vs. Sweet Basil).
Just tossing this out there as a personal anecdote. I still believe the advice and will try sweet basil instead in case that was the issue.
Hey Brian! I’ve tried a lot of these this year with pretty good luck. Any advice on squash bugs? I’ve planted zucchini 4 times this summer and have gotten a total of 5 fruit🤨 They’ve moved on to my butternut squash and pumpkins now, which they don’t normally bother. Is it best to leave the plants they’ve damaged as a “trap” or remove them from the garden?
If I want to plant hairy vetch or crimson clover as a cover crop where I want to plant tomatoes later, when do I plant the cover crop and do I just cut it down when I'm ready to put in the tomatoes?
Is Sweet Alyssum an allium plant? I read somewhere some insects don't like the smell of Sweet Alyssum.
