This is Portland, Oregon. Curb strips and front lawns are almost all converted into gardens and I’m absolutely in love.

My husband and I were just admiring all of the bees and butterflies and insects busy in our garden, and wondered what things would be like if everyone did this! This is so cool. And it shows how many different ways there are to approach this. Thanks for sharing!!

Hey!!! Love to see the post about my home of Portland. Walking around spots like this is what got me digging up my front yard and just planting.
NE Portland around Alberta can be great for old front yard gardens also.

I miss walking around Portland so much!

As it should be… planting things that make sense for the given location. 💚

Sneaky cat 🐈 Love this. No squirrels there or deer? I could never grow sunflowers like that, they get eaten every time I try!

Ours is in SE too

A lot of core-ish Toronto is like this too. It’s the only thing I like about commuting into the city. It’s honestly just weird to see the yards that are cut grass without even a tree in between lush yardens. I think having small yards helps, it’s less intimidating to make the whole thing a garden and being small just seems like a waste of time to mow it.

I loved walking around just to check out all the plants! And maybe pick some random fruit.

I visited there last year staying near Division and can confirm! It’s dreamy as all hell.
Probably helps that the climate is mild and wet so lots of kinds of ground cover and ferns can thrive there.
I’m in NE Portland and it’s the same! It helps that we don’t have HOAs in most of the inner neighborhoods (aside from multifamily buildings) and we have a very mild climate.
I was sitting on my couch the other day and saw someone come and take photos of my no lawn front yard (rain garden, lots of hostas, ferns, anemones, etc.) – it’s good to remember how lucky we are here.

One of my favorite things about Portland is the anti-lawn trend here! There’s some kind of program to get your yard a sign that says “certified backyard habit”, it brings me a lot of joy to see it!
Below is a link for more information on the program!
