It’s thirsty and probably hungry for nutrients

  2. Well you got a cool hat in the end, so there’s that. Has it been very hot? Cool season grass needs a ton of water to cope with heat.

  3. I’m also in PA. We had a lot of rain in the spring and early summer, but it’s been fairly dry for about 6-7 weeks now.

Looks like it suffered from the heat and lack of water.

Does your area suffer from armyworms? I’ve seen lawns get nuked overnight from them.

My neighbor put down $5k of sod a couple of years ago, and got hit by armyworms that same season and lost the whole thing in two days.

Same thing happened to mine. Heat stress and fungus. Happens when the temperature overnight doesn’t drop below 75.

    PA resident here as well.

The past 2-3 weeks have been pretty brutal temp-wise, with almost no rain (and no clouds).

The sun is just baking the yard. Most of it will come back from dormancy in the fall. You can help a bit by watering 2-3x a week in the early morning so that the water soaks in.

Could be heat. Could be a fungus. Could be insects. I just put down a combination fungicide/insecticide this morning. I can’t remember the name but I always get the same brand. Comes in a black bottle and hooks up to your hose. Couldn’t hurt to try it. I get mine at Lowe’s.

here in Georgia, when that happens to my fescue, it’s mold/fungus. I treated for it once but wasn’t worth the effort and cost so just overseeded in fall and all was good.

I’m not saying this is the case here (but it could be) so many posts like this, I have to wonder if they weren’t overseeded with rye. Obviously not all dead grass is rye, but when I see gorgeous green lawns go to hell as soon as it gets hot, I have to wonder. I’m in the SouthEast 8a and we have plenty of Fescue lawns that don’t all burn up in the summer heat.

Welcome to summer and cool season grass

It’s sleeping to protect itself from the heat. Will be fine again next spring

  12. Mine every year it doesn’t rain twice a week in summer… New England lawns ..

I’m in Ohio and had a solid 4-6 week stretch where it was hot, humid, and rained almost every day which led to fungus. It immediately switched to hot and dry for the past month or so and almost every lawn looks like yours. I’ve treated mine with fungicide and a light dusting of milorganite then just watered it for a long time each morning, maybe a short evening watering for problem spots. Need to just limp to the finish line till temps cool down a bit.

I got hit with fungus. With all that rain most likely what happened..

What’s the cutting height? As if too short, it simply dries out much faster. I set 5cm height when dry period.

Heat! Mines look like that and where there is shade it’s still green! The temperature just been to hot, it’s abuse for the poor plants out here.

Climate change. Same zone and the last 3 summers its been impossible for even fescue to survive. I even put in a sprinkler system.

With a hat like that you gotta be asking these questions phrased like “what in tarnation happened to my lawn” instead of “wtf happened?”
