Dubrovnik’s historic Trsteno Arboretum will feature in a new four-part British television series, Great Gardens of Europe, which launches on Channel 5 on Saturday, August 23 at 18:20. Produced by Athena Films Ltd, the series will air weekly and be available on catch-up.
The programme takes viewers on a journey through some of the continent’s most beautiful gardens, pairing them with celebrated British landscapes. Along the way, it offers practical gardening tips, historical insights, and striking visuals. Executive producer Claudia Riccio said the show is designed not only for gardening enthusiasts—of which there are more than 27 million in the UK—but also for anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature and its influence on the classic English garden.
The final episode will shine a spotlight on the 500-year-old gardens of Trsteno, situated just outside Dubrovnik. Established in the late 15th century by the noble Gozze family, Trsteno is among the oldest renaissance gardens in the world, renowned for its aqueduct, baroque fountain, exotic plants, and sweeping Adriatic views. More recently, it became known to international audiences as one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones.
Other featured gardens in the series include the Hortus Botanicus in the Netherlands, Parque de Monserrate in Portugal, and the dazzling dahlia gardens of Mainau Island in Germany.
For Dubrovnik and the wider region, Trsteno’s inclusion represents a chance to showcase its natural and cultural heritage to a broad UK and international audience, reinforcing its reputation as a destination where history and landscape intertwine in spectacular fashion.
