If you’ve strolled through the Pine Grove Community Garden this summer, you’ve seen clusters of tomatoes, beans climbing trellises and cucumbers galore. But look a little closer, and you’ll find something even richer taking root in this small patch along East Pottsville Street — friendships, community pride and a shared hope for the future.

Since its founding in May 2021, the garden has brought together different generations through planting and harvesting, environmental education events and a seasonal Saturday produce stand that offers fresh, free food to the community.

The blossoming community hub is at a crucial crossroads, though. The parcel of land that has housed the garden is now up for sale because the property owner is relocating. In a plea to local businesses and residents, the organization is seeking donations so it can purchase the property for $10,000 and keep the garden program alive.

“The Pine Grove Community Garden is a living promise to our community that there is good in this world and that together, we can make a difference,” said chairwoman Mackenzie Soltys. “It grows connection, care, and belonging for all — not just flowers and food.”

Soltys said that by purchasing the garden plot parcel outright, the organization will help preserve the community garden as a space where youth garden club members can continue to learn about growing food and environmental stewardship through a partnership with the Open Door Project.

Saving the garden will also help ensure accessibility to fresh produce for the community — a growing concern as food prices continue to rise.

Soltys said all donations of all sizes from individuals and businesses are appreciated. Five donation tiers offer different donation benefits like a garden sticker for “Seed Supporters” who donate $1 to $99 or a feature in the newsletter and website and a social media thank you for “Silver Sprout” supporters who donate $250 to $499. Those who donate at the $1,000 “Platinum Planter” level will have their names permanently displayed on the garden mural and on the seasonal donor wall on the free produce stand.
