Rosella plants have been such a lovely new addition to the garden, especially making fresh tea from them. They have these pale yellow flowers that turn into these red buds called kaixes, and that’s the part we harvest. Mum’s just using pruners here cuz they can be quite tough to pick by hand sometimes. I planted these from seed in September last year, and this is what they were looking like in May this year, where we were able to harvest quite a few buds. We separated the petals from the seed pots and then just let them dry in the sun for a few days to make rosella tea, hibiscus tea. It’s the same thing. You can see after a few days of sun drying, the seed pods pop open and when the seeds turn like brown to blackish, they’re ready to be used. Or you could just leave a few kixes on the plant to open up naturally and collect the seeds when they’re ready. I just recently harvested these kixes in winter. The rosella plants are still producing. I’m going to make fresh tea from it. It’s super simple. So, you just need to remove the petals from the pods. Give them a bit of a rinse. Dry them off slightly. I’m using around two buds here to make tea for two, myself and mom. So, I’m going to pour hot water over them and let them steep for about 5 to 10 minutes. I just love watching it turn this vibrant red color. It’s so cool. The longer you steep it, the more tart it becomes. I like to add a bit of honey to mine, but you can definitely use other sweeteners. This tea is really refreshing. You can enjoy it hot or iced. Yeah, definitely a keeper. I just can’t wait to grow more this spring and make more drinks, jam, salads, and other goodies.
