COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – It’s fig season and there are many varieties to enjoy.

“We have about 100 different varieties that we’re looking at here at Texas A&M,” said Tim Hartmann, Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist with Texas A&M Horticultural Services. “Of course, there are so many more than that, but all different shapes and colors and sizes.”

Hartmann said figs are one of the easiest crops to grow as long as they have sun and some drainage.

“Cold can be an issue kind of early on but once they get established they’re okay,” he said.

One of the main issues is animals, like birds, may try to enjoy your figs first.

“You may have to think about netting them to keep the birds off,” said Hartmann.

He said they’re really easy to propagate, which makes it fun to trade figs.

“You can take cuttings, pass them around and yeah, just a fun crop to grow,” he said.
