Thanks for growing with us!

It is a beautiful September evening and we want to share some of the beautiful things in the garden. Some perennials and shrubs are taking on their Autumn color while some annuals are still in full summer mode.

We also are sharing how we are tagging the dahlias we want to dig up to save for next year and share what it looks like when you save seeds.

hi everyone I’m Eric and I’m Christopher and we’re grow for me gardening today we’re going to do a midt evening Garden [Music] Walk welcome back to our garden here in zone 5B 6A it is a beautiful mid-september evening and we want to take you on a little walk around take a look at some of the stuff that’s looking fantastic the first thing I want to share here on the gothic Arch is our two generous Gardener roses they have finally touched they did it I tied them in a little bit stronger this afternoon and just couple blooms coming I see a little bit of Bud action throughout I cannot wait to get couple last whiffs of this beautiful fragrance before the season ends look at that glowing in the light right there so pretty the main feature of the garden that I personally think is just spectacular right now is the entire East fine just like the one thing that’s really spectacular it’s just great basically this border has a lot of repetition of perennials and shrubs but a lot of them really come into their own here in the fall fall in love sweetly and nemy next to an Autumn Joy Sedum and how that all plays together with different textures and lots of pollinator action let’s not forget to mention how panical hydranges are coming into their own this time time of year too we do still have some annuals going strong it is still nice and warm we have of course the Rock and play in the blue salvia Workhorse this will go until Frost and it completely right now it looks like it’s covered in honeybees I don’t see any the oh there’s one little Bumble right there recently I pulled out the annuals from this container minus this fbina I’m learning about the water in containers we learning water in those containers especially in concrete Planters I think before we were using plastic I have a feeling the concrete loses water a little bit differently probably need to up the water on those of course North Wind panicum the best grass ever gigantic huge frond this will get divided next year I don’t know if we’ll just put it right back in the same place or half of it back in the same place what do you think Eric uh well every year we do say it’s going to be divided next year and this is the here we have to do it because it is getting quite large we will keep half of it in place and maybe put the other half someplace on the BM that’s a good idea I feel like there’s just lots of things kind of going to bed right now Serendipity alium of course going to bed and you can see all the seed pods from that milke weed back there I wanted to show you something really pretty over here the Violet kfia is very nice and the huming words really enjoy it this is a new for 2025 and ual from Proven Winners I like the color of this flower better than the Vivid Violet over there yeah that one’s not my favorite not my favorite Bosell starting to put out another flesh of flowers I think people forget that fall is a time for Roses they get so much joy from those cooling temperatures let me get right in here oo Rock and play in the Blues is repeated over here check out Sublime this is invincibelle Sublime hydrange it’s a smooth leaf hyd rer nice fresh blooms mid AG blooms and then the older blooms turn this like froggy green which I really really like it’s a great hydrangea highly recommend it takes full sun to part sun can you tell it’s his favorite what can you tell it’s his favorite it’s Sublime what can I say this hedge of supertunia mini Vista Plum vein has done very well for us it’s a new for 2025 ual from Proven Winners that’ll be available next season and I’m really really happy with it as I am also very happy with the tough stuff top fun hydrangea another newer variety from Proven Winners it has bloomed for us three times this season here’s our first Bloom our second set of blooms are kind of heish or more like here and then there’s a whole another set of blooms coming out again pretty amazing it’s pretty outstanding Verina Banis is hitting its stride this is an annual for us it will Reed itself so if we wanted to prevent reeding we would start cutting it back now and pulling it out before it dropped all the seeds not that it hasn’t dropped thousands already but in the springtime those seedlings will grow if we find there’s too many in a certain spot we will remove them or transplant them to another spot that we want them but we are really really big on repetition in the garden and this is one of the easiest flowers for repetition cuz it’s easy to grow the pollinators love it it’s light and Airy and ethereal so it doesn’t have like weight to it that feels heavy in the garden it just feels light and pretty Christopher check out this flush of roses on reminiscent pink this is a highly scented Rose from it’s proven winners here’s a fresher Bloom right here there you go yeah I have been so impressed this Rose has not been treated it has not been sprayed in weeks and weeks it is healthy we do not have fungus we do not have any kind of damage and we also have this one cane that is tremendous it does put out a random cane or two there are three quickfire Fab hydrangeas in there it’s a panicle hydrange it blooms on new wood later in the season but check out that fall color it transitions from bright white to this deep Berry red as the season progresses and it’s really lovely also blooming nice and fresh in the garden is steady Eddie by Burnham hasn’t stopped it’s been steadily blooming for months this is the kelen Dalia it’s kind of a water lily style these are the only tubers that we have in the garden we were sent these by the guys at Darcy’s dollas thank you so much it has been performing beautifully it did take on some damage before I had staked it and so it’s growing a little interestingly but the flowers are stunning I have a fun update on the seedling dollas I finally got out here and decided which ones were going to be saved the way that I’ve decided was I came out here and I looked for the bees and I figured let’s let the bees choose which flowers we keep what I did is I took a little white plant tag from my seed starting and I put a hole through it and then I put a zip tie through that hole and I took a picture of the number on the tag next to the bloom I was choosing to save so once the first Frost comes and these all start dying back to the ground and blackening and looking all ugly we will know which ones to save and I have a record on my phone of which are which perfect been such a success this year I also am going to save some seeds I’m seeing this PO here in particular is looking very close and you oh this one did it nope this one um is not going to be good for collecting probably got too wet that got too wet so I watched oh this one is right this one’s going to be it oh how do you know so I was watching on the fluet up see those right there see the little black seeds in there I’m going to have to take these inside that is the Dalia seed right there Isn’t that cool wow you wait till they get to that papery place when they’re not squishy like this is squishy some juice would come out but that is an absolutely perfect collection of Dalia seeds and then how do you know what dollia is going to grow from that you don’t because these have all been pollinating each other all right so that’s kind of fun I was hoping to K seeds from the one that looks the closest to floret which if you follow floret Farms you know which one I’m talking about this one’s kind of the closest to floret but did you save this one cuz this one from back there was really striking I didn’t this one did not get saved by the bees wow I did notice the bees were on more of the whites and apricots than they were on the hot pinks isn’t that interesting um you can see here this is number five I know this was your favorite that was one of mine I love this style of dollia the nice open face that one was saved gosh I got oh here we go this here this is number six I mean that’s just an incredible plant so that’s exciting we’re going to save those when you save the tuber you know you’re going to get the same plant next year when you save seeds you just don’t know what you’re going to get panicle hydranges again this is little lime punch hydrangea look at the fall color on these blooms these were just planted 2 years ago and little lime punch has extremely sturdy stems it’s supposed to get 3 to 5 feet tall and wide so this is still on the smaller side for it but it does get this dark dark Rich pink color kind of like Hawaiian Punch Yeah I think that’s probably why it was named that but Christopher look over here don’t look at the wilting plants but look over here at the winter berry berry heavy gold loaded with golden berries how beautiful is that with the stand of zenas behind it these are florette flower seeds again and it is alpen glow alpen glow yes I have not watched her video on how to save Zenia seeds so but come this way and get a little closeup of them there’s some really nice pretty color combinations I love this one it’s like a honey color and then the lavender it’s been really fun just kind of growing them from seed and seeing what happens our corn has made quite the progress Christopher did you notice it the back row suddenly got taller how funny back is pretty tall it is loaded with ears of corn they are very small but it’s still a success yes Sil corn our beans have been producing like crazy and I have been eating them like crazy really enjoying the beans all of our seedlings are up and happy different types of lettuce there’s some radishes here I’ve already eaten some of the radishes and this is that Mauna that was very interesting that came as a free seed we’ll see what that does the pumpkins will get harvested for Decor soon we have officially let the 2025 annual containers go to sleep yeah we’re just letting them go you know what this time of year with the containers we just kind of let them go because they only have a few weeks left before the killing Frost is here um and that’s all the containers on the porch or the Terrace I can show you quick some of them are still looking really fresh like this part sun one over here I know all of a sudden this one is almost taking off looking very fresh and happy in the cooler weather um but then also others are looking quite tired um but even the the parade ones are looking really happy and fresh and our lemon tree has lemons that are turning yellow which is very exciting the shade area here is having a moment especially with the Sun King aelia shining so brightly and putting its Bloom stalks on very cool this is definitely getting divided next spring this is a perennial Believe it or or not it’s not a shrub it’s a perennial and we might even do the Chelsea Chop on it next year to kind of help keep its size in check that’s a good idea and speaking of taking off this year the Carolina sweetheart Red Bud incredible groww so much obviously we’ll be limming it up and pruning it and training it now when it’s young is the time to train and prune your trees this entire front branch is probably going to be coming off we want it to be tall and we want to train it to go out and over this little pathway so it’ll be going through some transformation next year so enjoy these branches while you have them buddy we did have a little deer sneak in on this side of the yard from the street we have all the the protection in the back for the deer we have the wireless deer fence and the yard enforcer and the deer spray and we’ve ignored the front up here and they they sneak in and they had some snacks but look at this o Clare Austin Austin looking beautiful and I think willerton old hall right behind you is blooming too Christopher just a single Bloom just a single Bloom it’s that time of year you know the garden’s getting tired just like we are we did some roling over here on the West side over the last couple weeks and we planted a rolled dog David Austin Rose this Rose smells amazing it’s an incredibly floriferous Rose and for just having been planted what an awesome little bonus to get a little flower at the end of the season Limelight Prime in its prime much stronger stem than the traditional Limelight lovely Rich pink color this is doing fantastic this season so pretty below that here a very successful new annual I think this might be my annual of the year would be the unplugged white this will come out next season it’s gotten quite tall I think it’s supposed to be on the shorter side but it is happy it’s a sagey color kind of silvery very pretty Fire Light tidbit another panicle definitely showing us so many different Bloom stages we’ve got new blooms white pale pink all the way into a dark dark fully saturated fall tone I’m interested in how this is so multicolored this season it’s kind of funny then I think this might be the last Rose we have to show you this is Gabriel Oak putting out just a few blooms this time of [Music] year up here at the front we did our fall containers adding in some mums some ornamental kale some ornamental pepper all underneath the rise up lilac days rose that is rising up that is for sure but this coral color mum if you get in close on there Eric look at all the variation in the actual Bloom it’s a pretty cool color yeah that’s some pretty variation very happy with that the fall is when our elevation bed really starts to shine starting with this purple fountain grass we have planted here this is an annual grass for us we replace it every spring with another new purple F grass and I love the color and the texture brings to this space the hedge of ageratum down front this is artist blue floss flower it’s an ageratum hybrid also an annual for us so those are the two annuals the purple fountain grass and the ageratum down front but then we have the we white invincibelle hydrangeas they stay this size this is their mature size we’ve had them here about Four Seasons then we get into the blue Kazo Spa which has this Kaleidoscope of colors on it especially heading it to fall and this really fun loose texture that I really enjoy and then completely changing the texture tone we have a tighter Fire Light tidbit it is a little bit droopy right now because it was a very hot September day but normally it’s like bright and full and very chart trusy behind that winter gem boxwoods in need of their fall hair cup but maybe we’ll wait and just do it in Spring cuz it’s the fall and who knows what’s happening yeah you’re supposed to wait for a couple days where it’s a little bit more mild and we’ve just been spiking up to these warm temperatures Walkers low Catman with our Vanessa Bel roses underneath there’s a lot of buds coming on that the tricolor Beach is also looking pretty good considering the time of year and the fact that it’s in full sun but Christopher back up we have to show off this pompous grass if you go stand way over there you can show them how big this dwarf pompus grass is I’m pretty sure it’s a it’s got to be 15 ft tall at least I mean I’m 62 so it’s is it double me at least it’s at least double you um I do think we might have to somehow prop it up cuz it’s kind of leaning over I don’t I mean it’s just really spectacular and look at this fall color on this um vanilla strawberry panicle hydrangea this looks wonderful as well and it’s a nice dark stem this is a sty hydrangea too we really like it but come on up here Christopher I can’t wait to see that turn fall colors yeah the red fox catur is supposed to have a kaleidoscope of gorgeous color come fall look at what is starting on the gasby pink Oak Leaf the fall color has begun this entire shrub will shortly be a purpley leathery burgundy color those leaves are spectacular in the fall and I got toia blooming too oh I do see that bloom but I just want to back up the Roseanne geranium is coming back into color and it’s just such a nice little thing and it’s funny how it pops out like it’s a climber also there’s like a random fresh Bloom coming on the ink Leaf very interesting standing very strong Into The Fall season are the Surefire Rose Bonas which have won me over they have I’m very happy to hear that cuz this is just a wonderful very low maintenance All Season performer yeah you might remember at the beginning of the season I was dubious but they have won me over lime rookie invinci or no not invinci smooth Leaf lime rookie is doing extremely well for us too and our viburnum ohand new there we go it’s got the blue and the pink combination just like like the picture very cool very exciting and check out this variegation on this Li o day I think once I gave it more light it got more variegation I agree I think it did once it got its little haircut earlier in the season I noticed you turned on the drip and I’m looking and I’m wondering where that little drip of water is going we’ll have to investigate later yeah that’s interesting I see little drips coming from all directions we know it works another lime like Prime looking really nice this one gets Morning Sun the one on the other side gets afternoon sun so I can’t say it’s that different maybe this one is a little more raspberry yeah a little more raspberry at this point and then baath Sheba Christopher check out baath Sheba see this was a rose I had to be convinced on which is rare I normally don’t need to be convinced on a rose but there are buds coming and I I like the softness of it in person in the photographs um I didn’t really care for it but I really like it in person now let’s see if we can get through here without the yard enforcer turning on to look at this invincible Ruby sending out fresh blooms oh yeah that’s the Ruby we love it very nice and then that brings us back to the yard enforcer going off that’s why we have it oh it’s cold oh that water’s cold and that is what’s keeping the deer from eating the Hy Ranger room it turns on in the it’s light sensing so as soon as like dusk hits it it becomes motion and heat activated there’s a setting to have it on at all times day and night and there’s a setting to just have it on during the day and a setting to just have it on at night so we just have it on at night so even with this amount of light it still counts it as Dusk and so it works which clear because I feel like this is about the time you start seeing the deer exactly so we’ll stay away from that but this concludes the September evening Garden Walk thank you so much for joining us as we walk through the Garden on this beautiful September evening again I’m Eric and I’m Christopher and we’re grow for me gardening thanks for growing with us [Music]

  1. My roses are still blooming as well. However the Japanese beetles still a menace. Taking a lot of every day! Is that a problem in your area?

  2. I love your garden. It really is holding up well as you transition to Fall.
The deer enforcer incident was priceless and I’m glad you left it in the video. 😅

  3. So many good ideas for my garden! You both do a wonderful job. I thought of you while I've been vacationing in Cape Cod. The Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich is somewhere you'd love.

  4. Please please please share the name of the sprinkler!?! I was going to ask how you keep the deer away 😂

  5. That number 6 dahlia— beautiful! Interesting to see dahlia seeds. I’ve saved my zinnia elegans seeds for the last 2 years and have been quite successful, with good germination rate. It’s the only type of seeds I’ve tried saving besides common milkweed ones. Maybe I’ll try saving the black-eyed susan seeds because those flowers were beautiful for several months, just like the zinnia. Beautiful tour, once again! I love your videos!

  6. squeal My Carolina sweetheart redbud from Mr. Maple arrived 2 days ago! I'm so excited and seeing yours again… 🎉 I'm struggling where to put it though.

  7. I am always so jealous of the verbena bonariensis in your garden. I am currently finishing a year stint in southern Ontario, Canada and although it grows really well here, (have to help it reseed)..no one carries the seeds or plant starts. Whereas I am returning to the west coast in a couple weeks where it is readily available!
    Your garden is sure thriving!🌱😍

  8. Love the #6 dahlia! Beautiful time of day for the garden tour, everything looks gorgeous. Would like to know the other things you do to control the deer from your yard, maybe you could include all you do in another video.

  9. That's DWARF pampas grass? Gosh, I'd LOVE to see how tall standards grow!
I LOVE an evening garden tour. The lighting is just perfect, as is your landscaping.

  10. Christopher, on your recent show, at your friends you and Eric were planting for him and you use a tool for edging. I've bag looking but none are tagged as a edge tool. The one you have is it labeled as such and where did you purchase? Thank you

  11. It will ideal that you both do a Grow me Tour. Create a garden on other weather confitions. Places such as Florida, Arkansas, Washington, Oregon, and more states. This is to help the viewers.

  12. Absolutely stunning. I do believe you are missing one type of David Austin rose in your garden. Princess Alexandra of Kent. She is one of the best!

  13. Agree that the surefire rose begonias look great there! Glad Eric came around! I am hoping to find the unplugged white salvia next year. My unplugged blue did return in my zone 7a this yr. Will you bring some pampas grass inside?

  14. Went to story’s yesterday looking for Iseli plants and I was surprised to find a good size non branded kintzley ghost honeysuckle. Thanks Eric for the suggestion!

  15. Truly spectacular! Every time I watch your videos, I also wish for an interior house tour. I am certain as gifted as you both are at making your garden beautiful, you must have done the same for your home. Will you please consider a tour of your home interior?

  16. For all the bushes you grow, which one is the fastest growing? Need something that grows super fast for privacy. Also, will the quickfire fab grows as fast as the lightlime?
