Welcome to day three of turning my backyard into a space that I’m not completely ashamed of. My motto for this project is that doing anything is better than doing nothing. It’s taken me two years of living here to come to this conclusion, but I’m embracing the fact that even though I can’t create my dream backyard, I can at least take what’s here and make it better. That in mind, let’s talk about this leaning tower of flagstone. This thing is a safety hazard and an eyesore, but it’s a ton of great material that would be very expensive to replace. I decided to restack them myself. And my husband’s exact words were, “You got this, but please stretch first. We aren’t 25 anymore.” And as much as I resented the statement, he was right because this was a full body workout. Please note that I moved like four rocks and half the wall fell down. Yikes. After getting all the stones unstacked, I looked around the yard and said, “What have I done?” But my mama didn’t raise a quitter, so I got busy restacking stones. It turns out that the same part of my brain that really enjoys a good jigsaw puzzle equally enjoys stacking rocks. Who knew? But seriously, once I got started, I couldn’t pull myself away. It was so fun. And to be completely honest, when I started this job, I wasn’t even confident that I could do this myself. I think Dave and I were both a little afraid that I would get halfway through and need him to finish it. But believe it or not, I saw this job through to the very end with the exception of two very large rocks that I needed help lifting into place. And in case you forgot what the wall looked like when I got started, here it is. And here is the after. Project costs nothing. And it only took me two afternoons. And it went from being an eyesore to a nice feature in our yard. I really hope that this inspires someone to at least attempt that hard job you’ve been putting off because you might just surprise yourself like I did. Up next, I’m going to finish this patio. So check back tomorrow for part

  1. Oh my!!! Great job!! You did so good!!! Have you seen those rock walls in the UK that are miles long??? They are dry stack and there are vids on how they do that…very similar!
    Are you English??? 😀❤️❤️❤️👍🏻

  2. Yup. My garage was built on the ground and the bottom of the studs were disintegrateing. I jacked it up and put old brake rotors as a footing and some old treated 4×4 ends to make sure they don't get wet anymore. It's pretty straight again. 3 days.

I leveled the floor in my apartment by jacking up the floor joist and putting treated 4×4 under them if a lot of weight was on them. 2 2×4 nailed together every 4" if there wasn't a lot of weight on them. 2 days. If jacking the joist made a dent I put an old brake pad at the top to protect the joist, spreading out the weight.

No more tripping on the floor.

  3. ALWAYS USE THE MATERIALS AROUND YOU THAT ARE FREE… if you possibly can.. you did an awesome job.. very professional looking

  4. I have done two dry laid bluestone walls, and rebuilt one. Those are beautiful stones. It looks like you have as good eye for this type of work.

  5. how ive been with my house the past few weeks, cleaning up & making better little by little & my god i had to have sweated out like 10 pounds of sweat the last few weeks

  6. 'Looks 'great but done improperly. There should some support behind the rock to hold the dirt from pushing rock forward such as rebar. Always good to research projects so you dont have to redo

  7. You should turn the area of soil by the newly built drystone wall into a rockery. The plants will help to anchor the soil and would attract butterflies etc.
