Do it. It’ll break down. I usually put in my dog’s fur that I brush off.

That’s what I did. Seeing a whole head of hair in the top of my compost gave me a legit scare the next morning lmao

It all breaks down eventually.
Including us.

Keratin is a protein and counts as a green input.

Eh, I’m sure it breaks down eventually, but it takes longer than the rest and I hate finding clumps of hair later. So I personally don’t compost it.

Place hair in areas you want deer to avoid. They hate human hair/smell with a passion.
crasito
Hair breaks down very slowly so I don’t add it.
Kyrie_Blue
I always add hair, have never added nail clippings. I assume they take forever to break down

Peeing in your compost is not a meme! Well it is, but we actually do it too.
MelancholyMeltingpot
Rather leave it for the birds to use in nests.

I dye my hair, so it’s a no for me, but when I don’t my hair goes in!

I heard a few times that old school barbers often had good gardens because they would sow the hair they gathered into the soil. Can’t imagine it would hurt.

Only if you pee on it first

This just adds the awesomeness that is my guinea pig and all the help he adds to our compost pile

You can but it takes a long time to break down and is pretty gross if you end up using in your garden later…nothing like going to plant something and sticking your hand in a hairball…I would just toss it in the yard or woods…birds will make a nest out of it.

As a rule, only add short hair. Birds will take long hair and get it tangled around their legs and wings. If you want to compost long hair or hair pulled out if a brush, chop it into small pieces first.
They don’t have this same issue with dog fur. I’d research whether long hair from cats is OK.
I personally would feel comfortable with the length you’re showing, but you can judge. I’d put it around your veggie garden, if you have one.
Just a PSA. Don’t start indiscriminately collecting from hair salons. 🙂

Wait. It’s a MEME!?

I cut my own hair and have thrown it in the compost before. After a few months it’s nowhere to be found.

I accidentally snipped the verrrry tip of my finger off with garden shears while pruning. We took a pic of the skin bit for the dr and then threw it in the pile.

We have 3 dogs in the house, 2 that shed quite a bit. All are senior dogs so we had to buy a lot of rugs to help them be able to get up and down off the floor. We bought the washable rugs that are available now a days, which we adore BTW. Our daily care is to use the bloom to sweep the rugs and the amount of dog hair that comes off is insane. That goes into the compost with no worries
LifeguardSoggy5410
It all composts. Yup!

Human hair is very high in Nitrogen, about 15%, grind chicken feathers that are a very high nitrogen source I use, is only 12%. Thats really good nitrogen source and Nitrogen is what makes plants grow and turn green. Great stuff for your compost bin.
