LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Girl Scout Eliza Szymendera of Troop 476 has turned her passion for gardening and community service into a lasting resource for Southern Maryland growers. As part of her Gold Award project, Szymendera created The Gardening Guide, a 65-page visual handbook designed to help beginners plant, grow and store vegetables commonly found in community gardens.
Szymendera partnered with Lexington Manor Passive Park Community Gardens to develop the guide, which covers 30 types of produce. The easy-to-read format includes tables of contents, planting instructions, spacing guides, maintenance tips and storage advice.
According to the garden’s announcement, Szymendera spent more than 80 hours researching credible, relevant information and transforming it into a visual format that simplifies gardening for newcomers. She also held information tables at the garden during public hours to gather feedback and spread the word.
The guide is available in print at the community garden shed and online. Organizers say a Spanish-language edition is planned for the future, along with expanded content.
More information about the project is available on the St. Mary’s CDC website, though the site’s project link may currently be inaccessible. The guide itself can be viewed directly on Canva, no account needed.

What is the Gold Award?
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious honor in Girl Scouting, available to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors in high school. It requires at least 80 hours of dedicated work to develop and implement a sustainable “Take Action” project that delivers lasting community benefits.
Earning the Gold Award demonstrates exceptional leadership, civic engagement and commitment to positive change — and often opens doors to scholarships, college admissions, internships and other opportunities.
