Had to dig out to build my deck and I just kinda tossed the dirt in a big pile. Was easy to get most of the dirt gone but now i fear I’m starting to get a lot of the grass with each scoop. I’ve tried raking it but it didn’t work so well

Use the back side of a metal rake and spread as thinly as possible over your grass evenly. Don’t use the tine side. The grass will eventually grow through the dirt.

Use a tarp. Put it down before the dirt is piled. I do this when I dig up my septic lids. Cleanup is easy. (note: the tarp likely will not survive the shovel scaping)

Go back in time and use a tarp. Short of that, get a hard rake or rock rake and spread it around enough to see more of the grass. It will grow through the added dirt, just do your best to keep it smooth as you spread it out.

Yeah i would just use a hard metal rake. Shouldn’t disrupt the grass root systems too much and you might have up with a smoother lawn for it

Rake it, water it heavily, leaf blower if very dry dirt. Alot of different ways.

Rake it in my dude. Spread it towards other areas of the lawn.

Don’t use a hard metal rake, it will catch and tear the lawn.

Loosen it up with a leaf rake, and then use a leaf blower to spread it out into the rest of the lawn.

Rake as much as you can and then try a leaf blower. If you get most of it up the grass should have no problem growing right through. I would throw some seed down anyway.

Would be a pain but if you really need to get all of it shop vac. You’ll spend a little more time and a little less muscle with the grass being usable right away (won’t have to heavily water)

Get a big spoon and eat it (have tried before and great results, although a bit slower).

Use a broom!. Not a soft or hard one. But one in the middle. I tell you, it freaking work!

Use that square point shovel like a broom, if you know what I mean (like the scoop side is pulled toward you and the flat end will rake that dirt out. It works great for that. Once you get it that into small piles, use the square shovel again to scoop up the piles. Clean the shovel first. But, like another poster said, a tarp is a good idea. So, is a blower. But, I’d use the shovel first.

  13. You’ve got a bigger problem than that, there’s a dog growing in your lawn.

  14. CreakyBarnDoor

Power sweep with rubber paddles, and a blower to finish

I would use the leaf rake that is in the picture. Rake the dirt gently to pull as many blades of grass to the surface as possible so they can see the sun. Then water aggressively for several days and hope for sunny days. Then water grass will grow and thicken in response to all the stress.

Dirt on the grass isn’t really a bad thing. It’s sort of just natural fertilizer.

I’d rake it and spread it to make sure it’s just a thin layer and water it. It should slowly disappear as the grass grows through it.

Rake and shop vac? Best to put down a tarp in the future.

  18. Use a garden rake. Rake hard to remove dirt. What’s left will blend in and not be noticeable after a few weeks. Overseed and fertilize if you want.

Use a tarp next time to protect the grass. Makes clean up way simpler.

Get a leveling rake to get a side benefit of evening out bumps and dips in your lawn.

Ryobi, Stihl and others make a spinning broom attachment for this purpose. I have the Ryobi version, works well for my DIY needs.

For the people saying vacuum or shop-vac, is this advice based on experience or “this might work” vibes?

I may have the wimpiest shop-vac in the world but I cant imagine that coming even close to working here; its tamped down, in big chunks, (and there’s a dog in it), and … yeah, no.

First of all, is this post written by the dog in the photo? Is so, while you look like a very good boy or girl, perhaps you made a tiny bad choice and should not dig in the yard anymore. But overall you’re a very good dog.
