This is a Tendai-ji temple in an area called Okayama. This time, we will create a new garden at this location. The for this project is Mr. Kazuhiko Takemura. First, we will install this large stone. Since it is not possible to carry the stone any further with a crane, we will use human hands and tools to move the stone. The large stone is moved by hand using a tripod and a chain block. Mr. Takemura intends to use this stone as a Kutsunugi-stone (a stone for taking off shoes). Kutsunugi-stone Kutsunugi stones are placed at the entrance or at a place where people can step down from the building to the garden, and are used as a foothold for taking off and putting on shoes. The use of such a large stone as a Kutsunugi-stone is not often seen in modern Japanese gardens. Move the tripod and slightly shift the gap between the tripod and the center of the stone. Then, lift up the stone, and the stone moves to the center of the tripod. In this way, we steadily move the stone little by little, though only a little at a time. We are getting closer and closer to the place where it will be installed. Before Mr. Takemura started his career as a gardener, he worked as a stonemason. There, he cut, shaved, polished, and processed stones in various ways, transforming them into various shapes. After many years of doing that work, Mr. Takemura became interested in creating gardens, and at the age of 33 he began his career as a gardener. For the past 26 years, he has continued to create a variety of gardens based in the Okayama area. In addition to creating gardens, Mr. Takemura also creates stone sculptures like this one. He has also been utilizing these sculptures in his gardens. Mr. Takemura has created an original garden using his own experience and skills. I am looking forward to seeing how the garden will turn out. The stone transfer has been completed.
From here, we will adjust the height of the stones. Kutsunugi stone is an important point that connects the garden and the building By handling the Kutsunugi stone well, the garden and the building will be connected and harmonize as one space. On the other hand, if the stone is not well placed, the building and the garden will be separated, and the space as a whole will not be harmonious. Therefore, the Niwashi’s work is to pay attention to every detail in terms of the choice of stone and the way it is set up. This stone was a part of this Kutsunugi stone. This stone was formed by breaking off the edge of this large stone. This time, we decided to make a staircase by installing the broken part with steps. “Nice” “It’s a nice atmosphere from up there.” “All right. Let’s fix it in this form.” Here, too, we will install a Kutsunugi stone. They carefully determine the height of the stones. If these Kutsunugi-stones are difficult to use, garden owners will gradually stop going out to the garden. In this way, the garden will gradually become unmanaged and eventually break down in shape. Perhaps the ideal is to make it easy to get down to the garden, and to make it an attractive stone for people to want to get down to the garden.

Beautiful!

Bonjour, j'aimerais comprendre , pourquoi les paysagistes Japonais aiment ils autant les pierres ? Ce qui pour moi est montre de bon goût ❤ félicitations ,très bel ouvrage.
I really like this opportunity to see gardeners with different backgrounds and different focus! These large stones give such a stable and serene feeling.
always enjoyable
Wonderful, I look forward to seeing how it develops.
That was brilliant utilizing the waste section of the stone to make a step.
Very inspiring to see each niwashi and their styles in their own unique way
I am glad to see hearing, eye and lungs protections are being used. Maybe it's not traditional to wear such protective devices, but people with such talent in stonework and garden creation must be protected.
What a beautiful job! The sculptor-niwashi sensibility is amazing. The balance between the large and the sculpted kutsunugi-ishi is perfect. As always thanks to mr. Matsunaga and JGTV team for their great work
perfect!😎
Danke!
Beautiful video! It's amazing to watch this process! Those stones are beautiful! The guest house I stayed at in Kameoka had stones like those at some of the entrances.
Takk!
Incredible to watch Takemura-san and his team install these stones. Beautiful. Thank you for providing another rare glimpse on the work of Niwashi. I love your video skills and background music.
I love that melodic ring that the stone has when he strikes the chisel with the hammer and breaks off a piece. A beautiful sound.
When I see these stone elements, I realize I need to redesign the entrance to our own home a bit and let my naturalism spread its wings more freely.
Wow I’m in love with your videos!
