The grounds add to the history and mystery of this abode as the cottage is found within the Grade II* listed Whitehurst Gardens.

The cottage that hides amongst the mature foliage within this amazing garden was Grade II* listed by Cadw in 1973 and amended in 1998 – a higher level of listing importance that is only awarded to around 7% of listed buildings in Wales.

Cadw states that the pretty ‘dark plum bricked’ cottage gained the listing as being ‘an important and rare example of an unusual type of garden building, set as a focus within the highly important gardens at Whitehurst, and which is well documented in archive’.

The listing goes on to say that Whitehurst Gardens, also known variously as Black Park Garden and Chirk Castle Garden, were laid out in around 1651 at considerable personal expense by Sir Thomas Myddleton II as a pleasure garden for himself and in which to entertain important visitors to the area.

The walled garden at that time extended to 12 acres and impressed visitors included The Duke of Beaufort, Lord President of Wales, Major General James Berry and later circuit judges.

The property is clearly shown on Thomas Badeslade’s 1742 engraving of Chirk Castle, and may originally have served as one of the smaller banqueting houses for the gardens, or maybe a summer house.

Situated on the lowest of four concentric terraces, with direct access from a boathouse below to the 3-sided canal or fishponds, Cadw adds that the building later became a fruit store and is now a dwelling house.

Back to 2025 and the cottage is now on the market and looking for a new owner, but it’s not just the property, its history and its location that make it unique because when the next person buys it they’ll be getting two semi-detached bungalows tucked away within the grounds too.

The semi-detached bungalows each have a living room and combined kitchen and dining room, and one of them has one ensuite bedroom while the other has two ensuite bedrooms. From their slightly elevated position the single-storey dwellings enjoy a view out over the gardens as well as dedicated parking areas.

In addition, according to the estate agent, there is a tenant in situ in one of them, so there’s a chance for the site to earn an income for the owner as soon as they move in, as well as a pretty, historic home cocooned within an equally historic and fabulous garden.
